I'm bumping a year-old thread to ask a simple question: What are the reputations of the largest Nashville firms (Bass, Waller, Bradley, Baker, etc.) among those in the know? I didn't go to Vanderbilt and am curious about the common perceptions of these firms' cultures.

Vandy kid here. I've only had negative experiences with Nashville firms, and it seems like only type-A people from the South really fit in there. All of the horror stories from OCI were interviews with Nashville firms. There are very few SA positions, they know it, and they act like it.

Another Vandy kid here. I'd echo the negative OCI vibes. It's also hard as fuck to get callbacks even if you go to Vandy and have top grades. I can't imagine how hard it would be if you went somewhere else. Bradley tends to fill most of their spots through 1L.

In comparing markets (NY, ATL, DC and SF/SV) Nashville attorneys are far and away the most insufferable and egotistical. You may fair well in the city though if you are 1) a white christian male with top grades or 2) a hot white christian woman with grades.

Waller is the only Chambers ranked firm in Nashville and they just started their 2L summer program (they used to do this fall 3L thing). Most of the other firms mention and a few others not mentioned hire 1-4 summers each. Its a small small market with a big fish in a tiny pond mentality.

2nd paragraph is somewhat inaccurate. There's a whole slew of chambers firms if you know where to look. Bass Berry is band 1 in just about everything in Nashville, and is well above everyone else for corporate work. Also is rumored to be the most sweatshop-y. Bass and Bradley usually have 10-15 2Ls. Most others are smaller though.

Follow-up: Do there seem to be any differences between the bigger firms? Are any of them less religious, conservative, white, sweatshopy, etc. than the others?

Not that I can think of off the top of my head. Had an opportunity through my summer gig to interact with a lot of the local firms, and it really turned me off to the idea of practicing in Nashville. The chances of getting something in Nashville are so slim, though. The best thing to do would be to see which firms you're actually able to nail down an offer from and then dig deeper. Most people aren't going to have the luxury of being picky.

I grew up in Nashville and my dad was a partner at a prominent Nashville law firm. I can confirm that they are incredibly conservative, Christian, fratty, etc.
