60/40 just means 60% of any given employer's interview slots are preselected by that employer while the other 40% are given based on a lottery and who bids these firms the highest.

I'm in a similar position (HLS, top 10%, URM). Sullcrom and similar prestigious firms are heavily bid on (according to anecdotal evidence I got from 3Ls and OCS), so if you really want Sullcrom you should bid it high.

OP here. Sorry, I should have clarified. It pretty much means students choose 40% and the firms get to choose 60%.
are you suggesting i invert my list b/c my chances at the top of my list are unlikely?

I'm around median at NYU. I'm using my high bids on the popular firms where I have a puncher's chance at a callback. Bids 21-30 are mostly reaches with a lot of interview slots and non-tiny SA classes. I'm not sure I'm using the middle-to-late bids very effectively though, especially for the CA offices that don't have many interview slots. Any feedback is appreciated.

So no one has any ideas about how a top 30% student at one of UCLA/UT/USC should bid?

Should I focus on LA, or smaller peripheral SoCal markets like Newport Beach, SD, etc.? I'm thinking that I should apply around the range of Greenburg Traurig, Venable, Perkins Coie, etc.

Thoughts? I'd make a more formalized bid list, but I really have no idea where to start.

Sorry for the delayed response. And no, not because they're unlikely. Realistically, if anybody at Fordham is in the running (and some students definitely are), I don't think top 6% vs. top 5% takes you out. I only say that because you put all of the firms that will be bid most frequently towards the bottom, with all of the firms that are less likely to be oversubscribed at the top. Again, though, I still don't fully understand the 60/40 system, and my observations may just be pointless ramblings because of that.

Good luck with OMM CC, though I'm not sure it's worth a bid. They have a fairly small small summer class (12) and only took one NYUer this past year (and he was not nearly median).

I don't know why you're bidding Sidley, Weil, Jones Day and MoFo so high. Also, Cahill, V&E, DPW, Quinn and Debevoise (also likely Paul Weiss) should be removed and replaced with some less selective firms. I would definitely look this all over again with an eye to bidding more conservatively.

I should have been clearer. These are in no particular order. I used a matrix to figure out what firms I would like to join and it lined up fairly well with Vault. This is largely because I had a lot of weight on how firms performed in the downturn.

Any thoughts?

I should have been clearer. These are in no particular order. I used a matrix to figure out what firms I would like to join and it lined up fairly well with Vault. This is largely because I had a lot of weight on how firms performed in the downturn.

You don't have any safeties. I wouldn't bid any more reach firms. Figure out what you want out of a firm, and look for less selective firms that do that. It seems like you're leaning corporate (I'm assuming you're looking at all NY offices with that list).

Also, if your only stated criterion thus far is "firms that performed well in the downturn," then the list is a giant fail. clifford chance, Linklaters, White & Case, Cahill, Sidley, and Latham all laid off a huge number of associates during the downturn. I would start from scratch and rethink your goals and strategy. Top 20% is a good spot at CLS, don't waste it with a terrible bidlist.

There is no such thing as a safety firm. TLS really needs to stop using that word, it is meaningless in the context of applying to firm jobs.

Ok. Rephrasing. I thought top 20% grades at cls would be well within or above the grade range many of those firms would want/require?

Yeah you'll be fine. I don't remember which list was yours, but if it's the one with huge firms up top you should probably re-organize it.
