is this evidence of a biglaw saboteur has been introduced into this thread to attempt to stem the coming tide of NY to 190k?

fats provolone wrote:you don't think bank of america's legal spending is gonna change when the entire tech industry apparently goes bankrupt? you know we're not even a decade removed from mass layoffs in biglaw right?

you're talking about a $160k/yr job that requires 3 years of post-grad schooling which for most people means accumulating a mountain of debt, that you can expect to work at for somewhere between zero and ?? years, with no real idea when you're going to get told you need to find something else in the next 3-6 months. oh and the hours are terrible and your skills are not portable to any other industry.

oh, and an industry that is highly leveraged with fungible junior attorneys and run by partnerships who are highly sensitive to year-to-year changes in PPP. so any downturn in the economy, in any industry, not just tech, is going to result in shrinking biglaw classes and associates being stealthed. meanwhile brogrammer #9 at snapchat can just move to atlanta and work for accenture if silicon valley blows up.

I would love to see industry-specific lay-off and bakruptcy data for the post-dotcom bubble burst vs. 2007-2011 Biglaw

Look, I'm not saying Biglaw is some type of perfect profession or that it is a holy grail that allows one to live a comfortable, risk-free life. But it's a valuable service industry that pay well (190k?) and has remained comparatively constant in its employment of top law students for the better part of the last century. I will feel more job security at a Biglaw firm than I would at a Silicon Valley start-up or even Google for that matter.
With very few exceptions, BigLaw as a concept didn't exist 25 years ago.

I was bragging to my father-in-law, who thinks I'm a good-for-nothing who only married his daughter to get at his BIG tech empire, that my starting salary was basically guaranteed to be 190 at this point. He thought I was lying so he told me to get out of his sight and that the only lawyering I would see would be defending my sorry ass in an imminent divorce after he gets through wrecking my marriage. He said he was going to hire SKADDEN to decimate me and get what little wealth I had and that I could forget about ever seeing a red cent of his tech money. I said, "Fine, fuck you, dad, you think you're such a hot shot because you own some fancy website and boss around a bunch of code monkeys all day." "Well guess what," I continued, "mamba1991 says the tech bubble is about to burst and your stock is going to be worth less than your miserable soul before the judgment of God almighty when he damns you for eternity for breaking up my holy marriage."

He stormed out and got on his cellphone right on my porch. "Hello, Skadden Arps Meaghor and Flom?" I could hear him by pressing my ear to the door. "My loser son-in-law said he's going to get paid 190 thousand as his starting big law salary. This is all the proof I need that he is a liar and a thief who is after my tech dollars. I want you to represent my daughter in her divorce proceedings." Then he gasped!! "How can you afford that?" he said. "My bills are already so god damn high, and you do this? Just get some more nobodys from the Penn law review, they'll be fine." He paused. "Oh you have cut some costs on your cheese budget and in raising billable hours requirements have you? Well, in that case I guess I understand."

I burst out of my house onto the porch. "Tell me, pops, what did Skadden say? That you owe me an apology? Or that you can go climb up a tree to suck on your own dick for a while next time you want to waste their time telling them how to run the compensation of their highly regarded law firm?" He started walking away grimly. "Tell me! Tell me!" I shouted after him, but it was no use. He got in his Lexus and drove away. But it didn't matter. I knew that I was right, that it was CONFIRMED NYC to 190!

I would feel safer in big law than at a start up for sure, but being at a start up would have a much higher upside. But yeah, Google's a different story.

My T14 has been buzzing with the sound of students discussing the future increase. Apparently someone leaked this top-secret memo on reddit, and it's definitely happening.

NYC to 190.

This schtick reminds me of the seniors in HS feeling cool about smoking cigarettes, then feeling even cooler when they tell you not to start smoking. Not exactly, but sorta. Good looking out. NYC to 190.

When I'm a miserable midlevel instead of a miserable law student, I'm going to deal with it some other way than haunting TLS. I usually just lurk but you guys are so got damn depressing I had to say something.
