Do firms expect you to do a second look after getting an offer (i.e. it demonstrates diligence)? Or do they not care whether you do or don't?

Theory: strong positive correlation between interviewer giving you their card and getting dinged

Not 100% perfect, but seems to have largely held true for me through EIP and CBs

The point of a second look for the firm is to give them an opportunity to persuade you to accept the offer. If you want to accept the offer without a second look, they'd be delighted.

I don't think there's any relation. I've gotten both offers and rejections from firms where I received business cards

10 screener interviewers gave me their cards; 3 invited me to callbacks, 7 dinged me.

I actually felt my heart sink when one of callback interviewers offered me his card, "in case have more any questions." Well, I hear back sometime next week. Will update you.

For those who don't have some uber specific practice area lined up -- Culture v Prestige? How are y'all weighing this? Would you go top 5 vault firm over a 10-15 vault firm every time?

No, that would be dumb. Vault is only useful in broad swathes. There's likely zero distinction in prestige between a v5 and v10-15, except Wachtell and Williams & Connolly (which are the only firms in the range that substantially differ from the others in prestige).

If you are transactionally focused, S&C/DPW/Cravath/Simpson and maybe Skadden will have a narrow edge over other firms in the v20 (other than wachtell), so if you are completely neutral and want the broadest corporate group strength those might be defaults (but easily outweighed by other considerations). I wouldn't call this prestige.

Hmm so issue I am facing now is basically while I am transactionally focused and enjoyed Skadden, Gibson was much more "friendly" I guess. Everyone from Gibson was just very kind and each interviewer sent a follow up once I got the offer encouraging me to attend a post-offer event and to answer any questions I may have. Skadden was my first choice going in and I think still is, but am curious how much weight others are giving to the "culture."

My philosophy on this is that the difference in "prestige" between firms like these is nonexistent. Look for the practices you want and the people you want to work with, that's going to be the thing that matters. Prestige is going to matter to your next employer theoretically, but any of the firms you've mentioned will be seen in the same way. Anyway, that's how I'm thinking about this.

I had an interviewer at EIP give me his card, look at my resume, read my phone number back to me, and asks me if that's correct because he's going to call me.... I have yet to hear back, not even a ding.

Do non v20 firms take longer to give out offers after callbacks?? Like more than 2-3 days

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
