Re: Columbia EIP 2014
Hang in there dudes. Too early to freak out. I've only gotten action (CB/ding/assumed ding based on CB info posted on here) on a third of the firms I interviewed with. Some firms call back the same night, but some take upwards of two weeks (if you don't believe, read previous EIP threads). I've talked to people with double-digit callbacks right now, and I've talked to people with zero. Odds are you're somewhere in between. Just try to remember the unrepresentative nature of the TLS posters and of the scuttlebutt (when everyone loudly talks about their callbacks, it can be hard to remember other people are being dinged left and right too).Anonymous User wrote:Once more, for those of us who are getting freaked out, can we post how man callbacks we've received so far?
I'll start...1
So sit tight while the firms do their thing. Follow my example and spend tomorrow far, far away from law students--the conversations just aren't healthy right now. I can't promise you we're all gonna get jobs, because statistics say at least a few folks will strike out. But I can promise you that the majority of students who are freaking out just a few hours after finishing EIP wind up with perfectly fine jobs. Remember, all it takes is one. To prove this isn't pollyanna talk, I'll give you a time to freak out: Friday evening. If you still have two or fewer callbacks by then, your worrying is probably justified. But you just really haven't heard back from enough people to piss your pants over it, so grab a beer and keep your phone nearby.

3L here:
Friday is getting late for mass mailing. I agree that people shouldn't freak out, but once you're through with EIP, if you don't have the callbacks you'd like, it might be a good idea to start looking through firm directories for alumni connections and start a targeted mailing campaign.

I also support Mono's sentiment. However, I think that you shouldn't have the mentality that "competition is tough, let the firms do their thing". If you are under performing at this point you should spend an hour or two genuinely reflecting on your screeners, your style, and what you could change. Coming from someone who is out performing across the board, I think there is something to be said for having a chill and sociable interview style.

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
I agree with this. I have gotten callbacks at V10 firms who generally don't sniff my GPA and I think that has everything to do with going out of my way to be a cool person they'd enjoy spending time with. In real life, I could not be that person for more than 30 minutes at a time, but if someone likes you, they'll remember you much more fondly than if they simply recognized you were smart and not socially inept.Anonymous User wrote:Coming from someone who is out performing across the board, I think there is something to be said for having a chill and sociable interview style.

How do you decide which firms to mass mail? I assume you don't just go back to the ones that rejected you at EIP...Anonymous User wrote:3L here:

Mail everyone. Pick your market (probably NY), find every firm with an office there, and mail until you find a job. I'd even include the firms that didn't give you callbacks because why not? The worst they can do is ignore you.

On the subject of firms that don't CB/get back to you for weeks; any firms in particular?

If you have a connection to a market, I'd look at firms in that area. In the city, there are probably firms that you didn't bid on/didn't get through EIP. Looking for firms is something that OCS might actually be able to help you out with!Anonymous User wrote:How do you decide which firms to mass mail? Also, I think the "be cool" discussion above is rubbish. I think being someone that people would want to work with is a good point, but as presented it comes across as self-congratulatory and meaningless. Some people do well at EIP. Some people don't. The process is pretty arbitrary and is swayed wildly by the luck of the draw of who you interview, when you interview with them, who interviewed before you &c. I wouldn't read into it too much (in any direction).

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
I think "being cool" is just a different way of saying being personable and generally likable as a person during interviews. When I compare friends with similar grades, those who are more personable and well-spoken did very well, while those who are more awkward performed poorly. Their credentials on paper are similar. I realize it's still early in the game, but the wide variation in CBs can't just be attributed to luck (although luck is a part of it). The fact is that some people are just better at first-impressions and carrying a conversation for 20 minutes, which could be restated as being "cool."Anonymous User wrote:If you have a connection to a market, I'd look at firms in that area. Should I be thinking about mass mailing if I have, say, two callbacks?

Yes. You should be drafting the email now and blasting it out by Friday if things don't turn around before then.Anonymous User wrote:Should I be thinking about mass mailing if I have, say, two callbacks?

Covington NY JC (last night)
Latham NY JH
S&C NY ML, JS
For those of you who aren't happy with the number of CBs that you have gotten so far, hang in there. I have a friend who got a CB today from a firm he interviewed with last Thursday even though his interviewer had already given out some CBs last week. The whole process is a black box shitshow so don't rule anyone out until you actually get a ding. That being said, I think that it is a good idea to have a contingency plan and echo what others have said above about mass mailing, especially if you have ties to a secondary market that is not well represented at EIP

Firms vary from very low to SulCrom which is near 100%. Look at the 2013 EIP packet which career services gave out.Anonymous User wrote:This may be a stupid question but what is he general callback:offer ratio?

Re: Columbia EIP 2014
I know people have mentioned total cbs, but what about a ratio? I know some people with 39 interviews and others with less than half that, so it'd be nice to get a sense of proportion. Is 1/3 what we should be shooting for?
