What the alternative, sharing your comments on world events or posting the six thousandth selfie? Why would you even have a facebook if you aren't interested in seeing peoples personal and professional news? I mean the website has a feature for reporting a new job.

Yes, we all get it. People do it. Tons of people do it. Lots of people also fart. Doesn't make it any less unpleasant.

But, its hard to say that its a "widely-accepted norm" not to post job offers when the opposite is true.

For me, "post job offers" is about as fucking annoying as posting engagement ring pix. Which is to say that I really don't give a fuck and wish I didn't have to read about it.

The litmus test should be "is this about me" and "am I really, when I search deeply within my motivations, just trying to talk about how good I am?" (the latter test should cover humble brags when you search deeply enough within yourself), then just don't post it.

I mean, thats dumb. Of course it should be about the poster, I would rather 100% of the time find out about a buddies new baby than hear some idiots comments on Gaza. Facebook is about sharing news about yourself with others.

I agree with the second part of that test, but I think an offer (assuming you haven't been posting about it all summer) passes the test. Posting grades is just to show off how much better you are than other people. Posting that you are going to be living in XX from graduation on wards, and will (hopefully) be licensed to practice in that state is actually relevant to third parties for more than just a brag factor, and therefore passes the test.
False dilemma dude. I don't want to read someone's opinion on Gaza or some law student's self important fucking explanation of a SCOTUS decision. My purpose on Facebook is to read and post funny and/or interesting shit. Anything more serious than that and you go on the "hide from feed" list. simple as that.
Can I suggest ...

In the limited context of the law school community, assuming you're not just running a low IQ schtick and actually couldn't put that together

It's an easy way to connect with friends I don't see often. I've deactivated it a few times and it's more of an invoncenience than anything. Also when I get banned I have to chat with tlsers to get updates. You're right though, 99% of people's content is utter dogshit. Doesn't make your argument any stronger.

My point is, WTF would I not post something that most of my friends and family either want to know, or are expecting to see on FB because its a common post type, in order to protect the fragile egos of law students? They need to just suck it up and read on.

And my point is, being right isn't a defense to doing it making you an asshole by the definition widely accepted by law students.

I think a job offer falls clearly into this area. My biggest use of FB is to stay in touch with military buddies, and I like knowing what they are all doing with their lives post-suck and whether they are struggling or excelling so that I can respond accordingly.

I really don't think a short, non-braggy Facebook status stating that you've received an offer from a firm and are looking forward to starting next year is inappropriate.

I get how other students might be annoyed by it, but I really think that the number of Facebook relatives and others who are genuinely interested in what you are doing usually would outweigh the number of law student friends that might be irritated by it. I know I have several friends where Facebook is really the only way we stay in contact, and it would be kind of odd to just send a random message to them when some sort of life event or professional achievement.

The summers at another of my firm's offices all got offers earlier this week. While rationally I know that different offices do things differently, my lady bits are convinced this means that one of us is getting no-offered.

I'm in the last office to have offers go out as well... At least our final reviews are today!

Its not like posting of grades, which is only for the benefit of other classmates and is self-serving. Having a permanent offer decides what state you are going to be a lawyer in and where you are going to live for the next half decade or so. Its very important information that a lot of people who are not law students care about.

Fuck anyone who makes me have to call all my relatives and friends individually and tell them that my wife and I are moving permanently to LA. I am just going to blast it on Facebook and continue dodging their calls. If that makes you sad, sorry your parents raised a sissy.
Personally believing a widely accepted norm is stupid doesn't stop people from thinking you're an asshole for violating it. And if most everyone thinks you're an asshole...

Its not widely-accepted, its just navel-gazing at its finest. HTH.
Everyone talks shit behind the backs of people who do it. You wouldn't know if you're the one doing it.
0L here but everyone talked shit at ASWs etc about posting here too

I sort of enjoy seeing extremely awkward staged engagement photos or some girl doing the ring pose with her pudgy fingers in every post-engagement photo she ever takes.
