The question was a completely valid one to ask, the one without social awareness here is you and the stick up your ass.bearsfan23 wrote:Congrats on all of your offers. Outed and warned for anon abuse.
E- To the anon who asked, I think this is just a fit question unless you prefer the clients at one or the other firms.
Simpson and S&C are very similar firms. Both are NYC centric with a few stable sattellites. Both are relatively conservative. Both do a lot of work with and for banks. Between those two the question is Midtown/FiDi and fit, there isn't much to objectively go off of.
Cleary is more international focus and while still being NYC centric I think it's non NY offices are less satellite-ish and more influential. Particularly strong in DC and South America if either of those interest you. Obviously the FiDi thing applies here and could be a plus or minus.
Skadden is unique amongst the major hirers of UChi folks in NYC because it's a global mega firm. That comes with pros and cons which I'm sure you've thought about. Again fit is a big deal here.
In your shoes I would probably start by choosing my preference between S&C/STB and Cleary/Skadden and from there maybe do 2nd looks at those 2 or otherwise choose between them. I would caution you for all of these firms to do your best to differentiate the work experience and the recruiting experience. S&C and Skadden do more recruiting bells and whistles than STB or Cleary which isn't inherently good or bad but you should really try to avoid letting that sway your decision.

I am just now starting to get emails asking for screener interviews from NYC firms on Symplicity I emailed over a month ago, so for those of you still searching, don't give up hope just yet!

Haha yeah, and as Mal guessed, one of them was from Orrick. But two others sent out screener invites as well. This might just be super-generic Friday where they send everyone an email.Anonymous User wrote:Anonymous User wrote:I am just now starting to get emails asking for screener interviews from NYC firms on Symplicity I emailed over a month ago, so for those of you still searching, don't give up hope just yet!

Anyway, I was trying to raise morale, but I guess that backfired seeing as everyone is receiving these seemingly-random emails lol.

Haha, Orrick must really like us then. I'll take it. I have to go out to NY on Thursday anyway.

I like a NYC firm the best, but like Chicago better as a city and place to settle. What's the play here? I find myself lowering the bar for my Chicago options just because they're in Chicago and i'd like to stay, whereas the NYC firm feels like such a good fit re: people/practice groups. Is anyone in a similar situation?

This depends on the two firms, tbh.Anonymous User wrote:I like a NYC firm the best, but like Chicago better as a city and place to settle. What's the play here? Re: UChicago OCI 2014
I'm okay posting here for the sake of posterity. It's Debevoise and Sidley/Mayer Brown/McDermott. I haven't met Kirkland yet but if i get an offer from them then the calculus might change depending on how much i like them. I also have an offer from Davis Polk but I didn't really feel any chemistry there and i'm not too interested. Am leaning corporate.Neal Patrick Harris wrote:This depends on the two firms, tbh.Anonymous User wrote:I like a NYC firm the best, but like Chicago better as a city and place to settle. If you're a social person, I'd caution against Debevoise as I've heard some negative things on that front. Those three firms are all very different. Do you have an offer at all 3? I think Chicago is a much better city and corporate work at, for instance, Sidley isn't really lowering the bar.

I'd probably stick with Chi in your shoes. Sidley is a bigger player in the Chi market than Deb is in NYC (though Deb is of course a very good firm) but your city preference is a huge deal. Unless you want to do some sort of work that Deb does that Sidley doesn't (securities maybe?) that's a little different.

Congrats to everyone who is doing so well! Just wanted to throw out a quick reminder that according to NALP guidelines "a student should not hold open more than five offers of employment at any one time. For each offer received that places a student over the offer limit, the students should, within one week or receipt of the excess offer, release an offer."

Are we supposed to be updating OCS with our offers? Just wondering how that NALP provision is actually enforced if no one knows how many offers each candidate hasAnonymous User wrote:Congrats to everyone who is doing so well! Regarding employers that link says "Compliance with the NALP Principles and Standards is voluntary" so there's not really anything to enforce assuming the same applies to students.Anonymous User wrote:Are we supposed to be updating OCS with our offers? Like all NALP things it is not enforced or enforceable. OCS doesn't care about your offers, only where you ultimately accept.Anonymous User wrote:Are we supposed to be updating OCS with our offers? It is ridiculous to hold 6 open offers though, you should be able to narrow it down better than that.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
