Out of curiosity, are red cards permanent, or is there some equivalent to playing with ten and sitting the player for the next match?vanwinkle wrote:The red card was for their inappropriate choice of response. When I give them, red cards are temporary "sit this one out" infractions. I typically use something like a mushroom cloud for permabans.bgdddymtty wrote:Out of curiosity, are red cards permanent, or is there some equivalent to playing with ten and sitting the player for the next match?

The only winning move is not to play.

I dropped a Pee Wee's Big Adventure reference in my LSAT class the other night. They looked at me like I was an alien.vanwinkle wrote:Shit. The joining the class of 2014 straight from college were born after Tracy Chapman and The Stone Roses released their eponymous albums. They were born after Madonna's Like a Prayer, R.E.M.'s Green, Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction and U2's The Joshua Tree.vanwinkle wrote: Shit. In movies they missed Predator, Full Metal Jacket, Dirty Dancing, Die Hard, Back to the Future and, possibly, Batman.
Now you can feel old.

c/o 2013 and never heard of those folks in my life. Nor listened to any of those other albums - except for that time when Madonna sang Like A Prayer for some telethon thing. Not saying ya'll are old...just near the top of the hill.albanach wrote: Tracy Chapman and The Stone Roses.

If a firm grants your Special Request does that mean your odds of a Callback are just as good as the other interviewees, better, worse, can't say?

How long after screeners are callbacks typically awarded?
Likewise, how long after callbacks are offers typically extended?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
There is enormous variability, and I would caution everyone against comparing in real time when the process begins. It can be quick (24-72 hours) and it can be slow, both for receiving the callback and for receiving the offer.Anonymous User wrote:How long after screeners are callbacks typically awarded?

In general NYC firms and especially the top NYC firms that all compete over the same candidate pools often move the most quickly.
Examples of the volatility:
* My dream firm gave me an offer the day after my callback. Others got offers 1-2 weeks after the callback. This summer recruiting told us it was because in August people go on vacation a lot and the hiring committee met at erratic and random times, it had nothing to do with the desirability of a candidate.
* At least one V5 firm last year made several waves of callbacks at UVA. People received callback invitations after others had already gone to the firm and completed callbacks.
* At least one firm sent two different interviewers, each in a different room. One interviewer made callback invitations the next day, the other didn't make any for several days.
* One firm notorious for making offers to callback participants the day of the callback made at least one offer 4 days later due to a logistical glitch on their end.
* Some firms made callback invitations slowly over the course of a few days, and while some people excitedly mentioned getting them next day (and making everyone else discouraged) several more cam through in the following weeks.

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
It depends, and likewise, it depends. For callbacks, some firms have a super quick turnaround and you'll hear the day of or the day after the screening interview, while other firms won't budge until their committee meets, which could take a week or longer. Offers usually require a meeting of the hiring committee, so it generally takes anywhere from a day to a week depending on when the callback is in relation to when the committee meets, although at least one firm (S&C) is well-known for giving most offers out on the same day as the callback.Anonymous User wrote:How long after screeners are callbacks typically awarded?

Cav is right, as always. Just wanted to point out that sometimes things can take much, much longer than a week. My offer from W&C last year was 3-4 weeks after my callback. That firm in particular is known for its offer process being pretty black boxed.Cavalier wrote:It depends, and likewise, it depends. Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
I was certainly mistaken--it's been a year since I went through this process (thankfully) so I can't recall everything accurately. NY firms are generally competing for the same students, so they do callbacks and offers fairly quickly. I think the typical practice is for the hiring committee to meet weekly (if not more frequently) and to make offer and rejection decisions then (assuming all of the evaluations for a candidate are in). Some (maybe most?) DC firms also follow this practice, but some operate much differently. One DC firm told me they wouldn't make decisions until October, and I had friends that had not heard from some DC firms by the end of September, even after the firm had given offers and rejections to others.
If you want to find out about a particular firm, I'd recommend you search it here on TLS, on AutoAdmit, and on the old OGI threads on the UVA Law Blog. But hiring practices can vary year to year.

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
I have a question for the rising 3Ls who are extremely knowledgeable about the OGI process. How bad is it to not go to a firm reception if you're interviewing with that firm during OGIs? I know that going can only help, but I don't have a car so I'm wondering if I would irreparably damage my shot at an offer with a firm with which I'm interviewing if I don't go to their reception. Obviously, I plan on cabbing it to as many of these events as possible, but as a preemptive question, is missing a firm reception unforgivable?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
Three additional thoughts:
(1) Schedule callbacks as soon as possible. Only wait if you have multiple callbacks and you feel the need to prioritize firms or travel.
(2) Once you get an offer, tell the other firms. Especially after a callback, if you have an offer and a deadline, let the firm know. Some firms will significantly expedite their selections process if they know you have a deadline.
(3) Once you have an offer, and especially if you manage to do a callback during OGI (this is possible), cancel your screening interviews and callbacks at any firms that you know that you wouldn't take over the one you got an offer from. This will open spaces for your classmates.

It depends. If it's an even that everyone is invited to and it's a firm that you're not that interested in, then consider skipping it. If it's a private event and the firm has invited you to it, you need to go.Anonymous User wrote:I have a question for the rising 3Ls who are extremely knowledgeable about the OGI process. when you say private events, do you mean events that only people scheduled to interview with that firm are invited to, or even more private than that, as in only some of the people interviewing with the firm are invited? If the latter, how common are such events in your experience?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
Skipping the reception hurts your chances of getting a callback, as it shows a lack of interest. Until you have an offer, you should be doing absolutely everything to maximize your chances of getting one, so you shouldn't skip a reception under any circumstances even if it's for your last-choice firm. Several hundred thousand dollars of income are at stake this month; you don't want to risk it just to save $25 on cab fare.Anonymous User wrote:I have a question for the rising 3Ls who are extremely knowledgeable about the OGI process. The latter; some firms invite only a few interviewees to a private event. S&C told every interviewee in advance that they would make callback decisions the same evening and everyone who received one would be invited to a dinner that evening. GDC did a secret dinner for some interviewees, not all of whom received callbacks. Those are the only two firms I can think of that held private events; the rest that held events made them open to everyone interviewing.berkeleykel06 wrote:when you say private events, do you mean events that only people scheduled to interview with that firm are invited to, or even more private than that, as in only some of the people interviewing with the firm are invited?
