NRF announced today that it's doing away with Texas-style two-tier compensation and is essentially matching NY bonuses for 2000+ billers in all US offices except some of the minor offices like MN and CO.

Re: What's going on in Texas?
Your info is a little off I believe. This is true re: matching NY salary. But I think you have to hit 2300 to receive NY bonus. Still, a big jump for NRF associates who were previously being paid way below market.Anonymous User wrote:NRF announced today that it's doing away with Texas-style two-tier compensation and is essentially matching NY bonuses for 2000+ billers in all US offices except some of the minor offices like MN and CO.

In other news, how many new openings are there for bankruptcy/restructuring attorneys this year? My guess would be more than a handful.

do you mean they anticipated this whole mess and decided not to hire the same number of summer associates for 2016?Anonymous User wrote:apparently Norton Rose cut their 1L class for this summer

SA at one of VE/BB/KS Can confirm that one of my summer firms also has a smaller class. Hoping no-offering is less likely because a significant number of summers are 1Ls

Not true. There are still 1Ls summers. But the 1L/2L summer class will be much smaller.Anonymous User wrote:apparently Norton Rose cut their 1L class for this summer

I think all the Houston programs are going to be smaller. But things are picking up big time again (at least in corporate) - so I am guessing most first will be closer to 100% offer and hoping for higher acceptance rates.Anonymous User wrote:Not true. Re: What's going on in Texas?
A friend of mine who works at one of the big three in Houston told me that their corporate partner said they are going to hire exactly zero out of their half dozen or so corporate summers this year.
Hearsay, but declaration against interest?

What are the Houston big three? I'm assuming V&E and Baker Botts are two of them. I'm just concerned because I'm summering at the NYC office of a Texas V100 firm.Anonymous User wrote:A friend of mine who works at one of the big three in Houston told me that their corporate partner said they are going to hire exactly zero out of their half dozen or so corporate summers this year.

Re: What's going on in Texas?
V&E no offered a lot of people last summer I believe and got a lot of flak for it. All firms knew about the shitty market going into OCI hiring, class sizes were probably smaller than previous years when they took this into account (although haven't confirmed this). I would find it very hard to believe that any one of the big three would do significant no offerings. this is just probably just dumb gossip.Anonymous User wrote:What are the Houston big three? Re: What's going on in Texas?
The person who had a friend say they wont hire any corporate summers is just making it up...unless its Fulbright but they don't really do corporate work so I guess that wouldn't be shocking. While the "Big 3" does mean BB, VE and NRF - people don't think of NRF on the same level as V&E and BB when it comes to corporate. If you want litigation, NRF is a great place to be. If you want corporate, you should be looking at V&E, BB, Latham, and now, I guess, Kirkland.Anonymous User wrote:V&E no offered a lot of people last summer I believe and got a lot of flak for it. Doing OCI this August, was planning on bidding TX (as well as NY) as second market after Chicago, is the situation bad enough that I should focus on Chi/NY and leave Texas off if I don't have a super strong desire to be there? Was planning on bidding VE/BB Houston and a few Dallas offices

Re: What's going on in Texas?
Dallas is not really hurt by low oil. If you can line up VE or BB and want to be in Houston, it is hard to pass up what that offers. They are the two top names in the state which gives you tons of wiggle room when looking for job #2 and no state income tax with full NY pay and bonus is hard to beat. Also, the feel in Houston is that most top corporate shops are back to being busy (at least all the ones I have friends at and mine). Oil is not going to stay low forever. Now you getting an offer at one of these two places with no ties probably wont be easy even if you have stellar grades without strong ties (which may not be what you mean when you say you don't have a super strong desire - but most people who don't have that desire are those not from the state).Anonymous User wrote:Doing OCI this August, was planning on bidding TX (as well as NY) as second market after Chicago, is the situation bad enough that I should focus on Chi/NY and leave Texas off if I don't have a super strong desire to be there? Re: What's going on in Texas?
Decent ties to TX (family and went to school in a border state) but very strong ties to Chi. I'm heading into OCI and will bid almost exclusively Chi, but my backup market is TX. Should I revise backup market? Or maybe just bid only Dallas as backups rather than Houston?

Re: What's going on in Texas?
Backup market + bidding BB/VE doesn't make sense. Like you mean if you strike out in Chicago you'll go to the top firm in Texas?

Re: What's going on in Texas?
You're not going to strike out from the top firms in Chi but then get the top in TX. All people I summered with and started with that went to UCHI had K&E and Sidley offers in Chicago when making their decision. You will also probably struggle to lock down the top two in Houston with Northwestern and those ties (if by family you mean like an Aunt). In any case, it should be unnecessary. Unless you are weird you should get offers with those grades where you want to be. And if you don't, you will probably find the same fate in Dallas or Houston.Anonymous User wrote:Decent ties to TX (family and went to school in a border state) but very strong ties to Chi. Re: What's going on in Texas?
I'm at a NY-based Houston office and our summer program is the biggest it's ever been. Then again, it's a relatively small office in the first place.Anonymous User wrote:I think all the Houston programs are going to be smaller.
