Definitely helpful, thanks. Looks like I'll have to spend a bit more on postage if I go for bigger envelopes, but I guess that's life.emkay625 wrote:Clerk here. More information is better, so I'd say include the writing sample and references, and I'd prefer not to read a bunch of applications that are bent/constantly trying to fold up on me, so I vote manila envelope. I don't think resume paper would matter, esp. since some apps will be submitted electronically (at least in some chambers) and thus will just be printed out on normal paper. If you do decide to spring for resume paper, you certainly don't need to print the writing sample on it.usernotfound wrote:For anyone applying to a federal judicial internship:
What is the consensus on mailing as far as:
Should we use resume paper for cover letter & resume?
Should application be sent in a full sized 9x12 envelope as opposed to standard?
Include writing sample or references?
Can't seem to find a consistent answer and don't want to do something stupid. Thanks.

When I interviewed for a 1L SA, there wasn't a screener interview and it was straight to CB and I had to interview with 8 different attorneys.BigZuck wrote:They usually pay for the second round (aka callback) not the first round (screener). They probably won't pay for you to go out but if you're in town already they'll do a screener. That's what it sounds like at least.Anonymous User wrote:I wont be in town and I dont wanna pay for a flight. Dont big firms (satelite office of a major firm) usually pay for interviews? It doesn't sound like it from the email.BigZuck wrote:Sounds more like an interview but impossible to say based on your descriptionAnonymous User wrote:Firm in a secondary market that I have ties to asked if I will be in town over the break to schedule a meeting with some of their attorneys.
Is this a legit offer to interview or more along the lines of the law firm home for the holidays things?
Suit up and prepare for the worst IMO
However, given how few 1L SA positions there are, especially for a secondary market, I wouldn't expect a firm to pay for travel. Just makes the selection process easier for them, unless you're a rockstar. You can call up the HR contact and ask though. I don't think it's an autoding to ask.

Just go, 1L paid jobs are unicorns, practice interviewing with some alum or your career office if possible, it's amazing how much better you'll get at it from now through the end of OCI, and it's very beneficial to learn early.Anonymous User wrote:

Having 1L biglaw interviews made me a much better interviewer for 2L OCI. It also made me way less anxious about interviewing. I think it would be worth it just to get a feel for legal interviews, but having a chance at a 1L SA ain't a bad reason either.

2L summer > 1L summer and grades are more important for 2L than what you do 1L. I applied to one thing that's due before exams are over and waiting until the 19th for everything elseWahrheit wrote:Sooner > Later, but the marginal few days are probably better spent reviewing materials for issues rather than submitting immediately. While it's always best to be done sooner than later, I've heard no. Apparently it's pretty much entirely about grades.NoBladesNoBows wrote:Also, I know that this is fairly contentious, but is there any sort of authority that suggests applying to 1L jobs immediately actually gives you an advantage? I have been explicitly told by multiple partners and recruiters at biglaw firms that they only hire 1Ls who apply on Dec. 1 for non-diversity positions. The applicant pool is usually large enough based on those applicants.NoBladesNoBows wrote:Also, I know that this is fairly contentious, but is there any sort of authority that suggests applying to 1L jobs immediately actually gives you an advantage? I've also been told this by people who actually had 1L summer positions. They indicated their only responses were to messages they sent out 12/1.Anonymous User wrote:I have been explicitly told by multiple partners and recruiters at biglaw firms that they only hire 1Ls who apply on Dec. 1 for non-diversity positions. Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2018
Why would firms take people for 1L summers with shit grades who applied dec 1 over people with good grades who applied dec 14 when they don't get grades until mid January anyway
I question the "if you don't apply December 1 you're fucked logic" but also don't really care that much about getting a 1L SA anyway so w/e

Cuz there's plenty of people with sufficiently good grades that apply December 1stbuckiguy_sucks wrote:Why would firms take people for 1L summers with shit grades who applied dec 1 over people with good grades who applied dec 14 when they don't get grades until mid January anyway

well what if positions are limited enough so that they can restrict their hiring to people who both applied on the 1st and have good grades?buckiguy_sucks wrote:Why would firms take people for 1L summers with shit grades who applied dec 1 over people with good grades who applied dec 14 when they don't get grades until mid January anyway

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2018
Probably because hiring 1L summers isn't high on anyone's list of favorite things to do, and hiring people who apply on December 1 provides an easy way to limit the field/keep the process short and sweet.
(I have no idea if you are actually fucked if you don't apply on Dec 1, but I can see why firms wouldn't bother dragging the process out.)
