I would suggest going back and following up with any of your contacts at firms. A lot of time some attorneys assume you are going to be fine for finding something without their help when you first reach out and therefore don't want to want to go to bat for you, but later (Ie now) they might be willing to help (what happened to me).
Thanks for this.
I have no contacts at firms. I guess I thought I was sort of "biglaw-secure" at my top school and I did have pretty good grades so I thought networking wasn't really necessary (mistake I guess). Any tips on what someone like me should do?

Also how do they help you? Aren't summer classes predetermined and filled? Don't associates have almost no leverage in terms of hiring?

Also, could you tell us more about the job search process after you struck out? Were firms still interviewing? Did you get any responses from mass mailings after Nov.? What happened to others you know who struck out?

Thanks

What he means is that you follow up with the firms that rejected you, especially if you were runner-up. Tell them what you are doing. Stay informed. They probably won't hire you for this year, but perhaps next year an opening opens up. Outside of that, you go to your local bar association meetings. You need to also get off of the Big Law track. That ship has (almost) sailed. You need to focus on ANY LEGAL JOB THAT PAYS YOU A LIVABLE WAGE. There are no set rules when you strike out. You just keep hustling.

Hm. I never heard of following up with firms that rejected you. How does one go about doing this? Most of the partners I emailed after the interview (for thank you letters) have not responded back to me, including ones where I've been on the final list of candidates. It's also been a while since I got rejected. Any tips?

Now is not the time to follow-up. You email them over the summer. Tell them where you are working. Update them if you improved your grades. Tell them you continue to be interested in their firm. Possibly ask them out for lunch over the summer, etc. Most of these people won't respond, but you just need one person. And who knows, perhaps they refer you to another firm. If you have a specific interest, intend those conferences. For example, if you like Real Estate law. The American Bar Association has a yearly Real Estate Law meeting. Go to that and network.

Can't believe I got out of this shithole 9 months after OCI, but it just happened. Got an offer at a Big 4 accounting firm today that was doing some supplemental out-of-cycle hiring. Off to renege on the bullshit unpaid internship I was going to do!

Congrats to the new attorneys-at-work. I have yet to even get an offer yet several months out. This really sucks.

Me too, abog. Me too.

Anyone into the idea of making this our Vale thread, at least until we can join the Vale proper in the fall? It seems that strike-outs don't have a centralized thread of our own until fall of 3L, but lots happens in the meantime. Or maybe there's not enough demand for it, evidenced by this thread's inactivity.
