Is anyone currently working in biglaw? I really had a few questions I wanted to address via PM. Please let me know if you can. Thanks.

There is no such thing as Miami Biglaw. "Is anyone currently working in shitlaw?" is much more likely to get you some responses.caesar wrote:Is anyone currently working in biglaw? I really had a few questions I wanted to address via PM. Please let me know if you can. Thanks.

Hiring is starting to pick up a little bit:Anonymous User wrote:What?
As promised, Scott has increased jobs in Florida. The fact that legal jobs haven't increased doesn't mean he wasn't successful overall.

Sounds like hiring is picking up for laterals because some firms have cut back on their summer associate program. One reason is the traditional pipeline for law firms – summer associate programs -- shrunk at many firms.
"Law firms are being more careful. When you commit to summer associates, they don't work for you until September or October of the following year. It's hard to guess what your needs are going to be," said Gorson of Greenberg Traurig.

It could also create a market for 3Ls.Anonymous User wrote:Lawof_theLand wrote:Hiring is starting to pick up a little bit:Anonymous User wrote:What?

Miami is a really tough market to crack. There are not many biglaw spots, and a lot of them go to t14 grads. And even the t14 spots are tough to snag.

Agreed. Seems counter-intuitive that if you actually want to end up in biglaw in Miami, you might be better off avoiding the Florida law schools altogether.Anonymous User wrote:Miami is a really tough market to crack. If you are willing, it would be very helpful if you could disclose the specific practice area you sought (litigation/other), around when you applied (and if through mass-mail or OCI), and a general range for the firm (GT, W&C, Weil, H&K, etc).Anonymous User wrote:Yup. Did anyone else think it was inappropriate that some Miami firms pull your credit report? I kind of felt violated even though I have pretty good credit.

Re: Miami biglaw
Accepted a SA offer in another city in Florida with a Miami-based firm and they also requested to pull my credit report. I think it's very much acceptable as it says something about your financial behavior. It's no different that what most landlords do, as well. Either way, you should have been provided an FTC credit reporting regulation notice when asked for your authorization to release the report.Anonymous User wrote:Did anyone else think it was inappropriate that some Miami firms pull your credit report? It is extremely hard to land a big law job in Miami. I was luckily able to land one offer but my friends working in other cities had a much easier time.

Does anyone know Greenberg's and Morgan Lewis's respective starting salaries? They're not listed on NALP.

So how advantageous do you guys think it is to go to a more Southern school, e.g. UVA/Duke over somewhere like Michigan/Berkeley/Penn? I have complete ties to Miami and am dead set on going back to practice. Also, I hope hirings picked up for many of you.

I think you should go to the highest ranked school within the T10.

Re: Miami biglaw
It honestly seems like more Miami firms do OCI/hiring at Columbia/NYU than at Duke/UVA. Also, if all you want is Miami biglaw, you might as well not go to law school because it's a crapshoot and all the firms will take at least one Miami 2L and maybe even a UF 2L. Then factor class sizes of 0-7 for the <10 "market"-paying firms and way more students in the T-14 with Miami ties and connections than you could imagine.

Re: Miami biglaw
does anyone know what market pay currently is in Miami? I've heard 135-145. Also, does anyone know what to expect in terms of bonuses?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
