It's often with the firm you spend your 1L summer at. Spend first half of 2L summer at a new firm and second half with your previous summer's firm.SplitMyPants wrote:Yeah. I never understood this. How do people even split? Every firm that allows it "must be the first half."Anonymous User wrote:Thanks, that makes sense. I'm just now learning that even when a firm says they *do* allow splits, the unspoken rest of the sentence is usually "as long as we're the first half."Kratos wrote:too late now, best not to worry about it. i probably would tell someone up front though, saves both you and them time if they dont allow splitsAnonymous User wrote:Had a callback with firm B after accepting a first-half offer from firm A. Didn't mention the accepted offer to firm B. I found out pretty early in the callback that firm B doesn't like to do second-half internships. I didn't cut the callback short or anything like that, thinking that maybe it wasn't a hard-and-fast rule.
Got an offer from B a few days later, and sure enough, they won't do a second-half internship, so I had to decline. I know that job hunting should probably be "always business, never personal", but I feel bad about declining, and I'm wondering if I should have told them about my accepted first-half offer up front and given them a chance to cancel the callback?

I don't know why. I suspect it's because they have smaller SA classes and therefore have a less rigid structure and thus more flexibility. Some if it may also be that the ones I know most about are based in Texas (even if having national presence). But even within Texas, it's the lit boutiques that seem more willing to take second half, while there are maybe 1/3-1/2 of Texas biglaw offices that take second half, and some of them seem to do so begrudgingly.SplitMyPants wrote:Why is that? (The boutiques, not Texas.)BVest wrote:That. And lit boutiques.BigZuck wrote:TexasSplitMyPants wrote: Yeah. I never understood this. How do people even split? I don't get the point of regular mail rejections
It almost seems more considerate ("hey we took the time to put a stamp on something and put it in a mail slot") but it takes so much longer than an email and is just kinda weird to hold and throw away

I recently received what appears to be an automated message from Paul Hastings, about a month after I applied. I'm trying to determine whether this is a ding, a random update, or a request to re-send everything that I've already sent them. Here's the body:
-
Greetings!
We appreciate your interest in Paul Hastings, and we would like to stay in touch with you. We are pleased to introduce PH Tips: an email series of best practices to hone your knowledge of the legal industry and various practice areas, enhance your professional presence, prepare for the on-campus interview process, and facilitate your transition to life as a law firm associate.

Did anyone else receive this? Should I just call and ask if they're done hiring?

Sounds like they just created (or just added all of this year's applicants to date to) a recruiting listserv. Expect to be solicited by them on occasion from now until you give up that email address.

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2017
Three telephone screeners/interviews coming up within the next couple weeks. Non-traditional law work, i.e., not firms, not corporations (except one, maybe in the loosest sense of the word).
Any advice? I'm good at coming up with questions to ask the interviewers but I don't know what to expect. Who goes first? Will I be grilled on why I want to intern/work for them? I can't imagine this being adversarial. Do I need to come up with some special narrative? Tips for staying calm on the phone? Best to put notes on a WordDoc for my reference? I'm planning on having their resumes pulled up or memorized.
tl;dr: What should I expect from phone screeners and how can I be compelling and get a second round call / interview and ultimately an offer?

I pulled up a word doc during phone screeners but that was more a safety blanket than anything, I don't know that I ever used it.Baby_Got_Feuerbach wrote:Three telephone screeners/interviews coming up within the next couple weeks. Other than that, just prepare as you would for a normal screener IMO
