lol the second-look trips are only "free" in terms of money, though. It still takes a shit-ton of time to travel back to firms just so that you can get a free meal (unless they're here in town). And I suppose you're lucky if you haven't had any meals with awkward people thus far. I mean those events are what you make of them, but some people are just not the kind of people you want to spend a couple hours at lunch with.
Sorry didn't mean to post that anon. I agree that second-look trips take a bunch of time and energy and aren't worth it unless you're really torn -- but we were just talking about local dinners/receptions, right? Which I still think are totally worth it. I've only had one meal so far in the whole OCI process that was less than pleasant… but then, I don't go into these expecting it to be a night out with good friends, more like a way to try a new restaurant with people who want to be fun (at least for an evening).

Ding in mail from Pillsbury. They enjoyed meeting me on campus and my credentials are impressive, but they aren't in a position to extend a callback.

...

I didn't interview with Pillsbury. Nor did I mail them a resume. So I guess this is a win for me?

Confession: yesterday I went on an interview because I feared I'd be stuck with the hotel bill if I didn't. It was too last minute to cancel and make other arrangements. I feel dirty.

What else are you guys doing that you have to give up free second-look/offer dinner flights to NYC or CA? Jesus. Go. Enjoy. Don't perpetuate our stereotype.

Edit: to be clear, these are basically vacations. Go.

Wooooow that is kind of awkward. Did you call to see if it was meant for you?
I did, and it was. Wrong attachment. Still, hell of a way to find out.

I want to do litigation in NYC. I've narrowed down the firms I like to S&C, Skadden, Cleary, and Simpson Thacher. I've heard that all these firms basically do the same work and I should go with fit, but everyone I've met at all these firms is really great and I can't decide. I'd appreciate some input.

Congrats on all of your offers. Must be really difficult for you to have to decide between your many options. Given your complete lack of social awareness, I think you'll fit in well at S&C

Was an SA at one of these firms this past summer.

You really can't go wrong among these. If you're really interested in investigations/white collar maybe knock out Simpson -- it's band 3 in chambers and the rest are band 1. If you prefer financial institutions work S&C gets an edge (note that BNP Paribas fired Cleary after their failed negotiations over OFAC/sanctions violations and hired S&C; S&C has also been super busy with FHFA/Goldman work and dark pool cases are about to heat up); if you prefer international arb Cleary seems like a better choice (though after fucking up the Argentina case we'll see).

Think about whether you'd rather work downtown (which make living in Brooklyn MUCH easier -- and NJ if at Cleary, which is near WTC path station) or midtown. Note that commuting to Times Square (at Skadden) is a bit of a nightmare; being next to Grand Central is great (at STB), especially if you want to live on UES (which is the cheapest area of the city below 125th at this point).

But really, it doesn't matter. I have friends at all of these firms and they all had good summers. Go with your gut.

This was very brave anon. You seem far worse than the original comment.
