Re: Summer Associates 2014: Thoughts, Anxieties, Experiences...
Just got no-offered by my firm... reason given was "work product." Based on conversations I had throughout the summer with my mentor associate, I know the real reason was that I got on the bad side of an influential partner and he made sure I didn't get hired. I only wish I knew what put me on his bad side. I did an assignment for him my second week where I made some (imo very minor) errors, but he seemed to take offense to them. After that, the guy just started avoiding me in the office and acted like I didn't exist when we were part of the same group conversations. He then felt the need to call me anti-social when asked about me before the mid-summer review... In the end, I guess I'm better off not working with a partner that despises me. Time to start working on job applications...

Mind sharing the market or any more details about the firm, such as whether it is normally 100% offer?Anonymous User wrote:Just got no-offered by my firm... reason given was "work product." Re: Summer Associates 2014: Thoughts, Anxieties, Experiences...
Big law office in a non-major/smaller market. I was told during OCI that the firm offers 100% of its summers, but once I got there, I found out it wasn't true. At least two summers hadn't gotten offers in the past five years, and given that the firm only hires 1-2 summers a year... yeah, definitely not 100% offer.Anonymous User wrote:this. What kind of errors? Did you make it seem like you didn't care about the errors when it happened. Or is this guy just pyscho.

Minor citation errors, like citing to the Pacific Reporter instead of California Appellate Reporter (because I was blindly following the Bluebook...). I was told that this partner's biggest pet peeve is citation errors, but I didn't know pet peeve = no offer. I fixed the errors in less than 10 minutes and sent it back to the partner; he just said thanks and that was it.Desert Fox wrote:What kind of errors? Also, I know for a fact that the other summer turned in his first assignment to this partner late, but he was okay with that. Just not okay with my citations...

They guy is either psycho or you did something else to piss him off. Him telling people that you are anti-social is a tip off there is something else going wrong here.Anonymous User wrote:Minor citation errors, like citing to the Pacific Reporter instead of California Appellate Reporter (because I was blindly following the Bluebook...). Yeah, that's what I figured. I talked to a bunch of associates about it, but they didn't know anything. I also tried talking to this partner several times afterwards, trying to get back into his good graces, but he would just ignore me. Like I went to a lunch with him and tried to casually strike up a conversation with him multiple times, and he would just walk away from me and talk to one of the associates. To be honest, I would feel so much better if I just knew what I did to piss him off so bad, but it seems no one knows but him.Desert Fox wrote:They guy is either psycho or you did something else to piss him off. Ask? I mean, already no-offered, worse he can do is ignore you (and he probably will).Anonymous User wrote:Yeah, that's what I figured. Re: Summer Associates 2014: Thoughts, Anxieties, Experiences...
I did the same exact thing in my 1L SA. I had a big research memo for a matter in Illinois Appellate Court. Blindly followed Bluebook and cited only to Northeast Reporter instead of Illinois Official Reporters (contrary to Illinois rules). Partner reviewing the memo just told me to go back and change the citations and be more mindful of the local rules (then said that it is something law schools SHOULD teach but don't). Wasn't a big deal. Sounds like you dealt with a psychotic partner.Anonymous User wrote:Minor citation errors, like citing to the Pacific Reporter instead of California Appellate Reporter (because I was blindly following the Bluebook...). Good luck, buddy. Maybe didn't even do anything. If the summer class is that small, maybe he just took a distaste to you first and, when they realized early on that they overhired, you were out? I'm sorryAnonymous User wrote:Yeah, that's what I figured. I talked to a bunch of associates about it, but they didn't know anything. If by 3 "offers" you mean recruiting or a partner telling them "you'll get an offer" then probably 100 offers have gone out.Anonymous User wrote:I stand by what I said: I know of 3 offers that have gone out from Skadden.Anonymous User wrote:Also interested in this, but this can't be right. Also could be that those people ended early/are splitting

By "offers" I mean have actually received official offers. They did split, but the offers were over the past couple days.Anonymous User wrote:If by 3 "offers" you mean recruiting or a partner telling them "you'll get an offer" then probably 100 offers have gone out.
