Re: The Vale of Tears (3L Job Hunting) (No advice for 0/1/2Ls)
Top 1/3rd at T14. Never got biglaw, struck out at OCI for reasons I won't get into as they're highly personal and never got another good lead on a good firm job.
First year out: School-funded job
Second year out: School-funded job led to government job in preferred practice area
Third year out: Successfully lateraled to v10 in preferred niche secondary market in preferred practice area.
Not posting it to brag, but posting it because I hope it inspires hope in someone who was depressed or even suicidal (I was) about their long term prospects. Don't wanna give too many details as I'm still kind of embarrassed about it and have always let people think this path was all intentional (and to some degree it was), but the most important thing was just trying not to give up and always looking to take 1 step forward even on the worst fucking day.
Also don't forget all the people who love and believe in you - even when your relatives have no idea about the legal field and you're the first lawyer in the family, the people who believe you can make it work are more correct than your own depression and fear of failure. (but this is for 3Ls only and don't use it to justify paying sticker anywhere, that's still dumb even if your family thinks it'll all work out for you. it might but it's dumb.)

Any advice for when a rising 3L should reach out to recruiters at firms? I have a non-prestigious v100 SA position but would like to consider other options.
Good luck to all the recent grads.

Currently at a V50 in New York and looking to change firms through 3L hiring. From what I've seen, a lot of the firms don't have open positions posted. I'm wondering if I should just cold email recruiters or wait for actual open listings.

I would try networking. I just changed firms/cities (rising 3L) and I got the interview from a connectionAnonymous User wrote: ↑Sat Jul 30, 2022 9:18 pmCurrently at a V50 in New York and looking to change firms through 3L hiring. Received offer at 2L summer firm, re-recruited due to changes to person circumstance, received 2 offers in DC (received both the at end of August). Personal circumstances changed again and I accepted the offer from the 2L summer firm.

I don't know if this is the right post to ask, but I could really use your collective wisdom here. How would a first year associate with less than 2 months attempt to change firms? Is this even doable at this time? My reasons are solid, and I think a partner at my firm may vouch for me if necessary. I am looking to move from BL to BL.

Re: The Vale of Tears (3L Job Hunting) (No advice for 0/1/2Ls)
I thought I had to relocate to take care of a family member and the firms I talked all said "we are only hiring based on the number of people who don't accept their offers" so yeah, it was stressful to have whether or not I could be there for family feel out of my hands, regardless of stats or schools.
Things worked themselves out, but what point is there in invalidating someone's stress.

Well, the original point of this thread was as haven for people who had to job search during 3L because they struck out at OCI or got no-offered, so a little different.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Sat Sep 17, 2022 12:30 pmI thought I had to relocate to take care of a family member and the firms I talked all said "we are only hiring based on the number of people who don't accept their offers" so yeah, it was stressful to have whether or not I could be there for family feel out of my hands, regardless of stats or schools.
