In DC I live in the prettiest neighborhood with great bars/restaurants and walk to work, for less than I'd pay in NY for sure

DC's also nice if you're a litigator -- more interesting exit options and the firms are actually litigation focused here, so you don't feel like you're in some ancillary practice next to 500 corporate people.

Honestly if I was a partner reading this cesspool of a thread’s weird combo of obnoxious trolling and amazingly stupid arguments about cities to live in I would want to decrease associate salaries.

NYC to 160? CovingTTTon to $140?

I don't care where anyone else lives or works, but the fact is that for every biglaw associate in DC there are two in NY who first struck out with a bunch of DC firms at OCI. I love NY and DC, I don't even live in either city and have no dog in the fight. I saw lots of classmates bid DC (or SF/LA/Boston) and then gradually realize it was going to be NY for them. Very few of them actually wanted to go work in Manhattan.

This is a good point. Comparing getting NY biglaw to the accomplishment of getting an offer anywhere else is pretty ridiculous outside of a few premier NY firms.

That's probably why no one is matching.

I bet we'll see some matches at the end of the day. It's Friday afternoon, would be perfect way to end the week.

The big Q is will the big players that claim to lead in compensation (V5, Cravath, KE, etc.) match the Simpson bonuses or not. NOEBONUS=2nd tier sadness imho

Hey Staci and ATL - unless you have something useful to say...STFU. No one gives a F about "what firm you can count on for big bonuses."

1. I love NYC, though I was raised in Houston. The City is expensive, but it has a certain oxygen to it that is unlike anywhere else in the world. As a gay man, it is also so nice to be apart of a vibrant LGBT community and have many more options for romantic prospects.

2. Skadden / Davis / SullCrom still have not announced, which confirms my suspicion that we're just waiting for Cravath.

We've lost. Momentum has stalled. CovingTTTon is going to lead a charge to take base back down to $145,000 with summer lunch budget of $18.00.

Regardless of what the rest of the firms do, every JD associate should resign.

Does anyone have an actually legitimate theory re: why the other major players haven't made a peep? Why wait for cravath when Simpson already did it?

I suspect there may be little appetite for setting precedent of giving COLAs.

Because if they match 190 and Cravath leapfrogs to 200, they'll have to raise again to 200 immediately afterwards. Not really a good look.

So it doesn't really matter that Simpson matched to 190, what matters is that firms perceive 200 as being unlikely.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
