If you're not already, you should try taking on multiple assignments at once. Before you finish an assignment, like when you've turned in a draft, ask for another. It's good practice for juggling multiple assignments when you're actually trying to hit hours and downtime is a bad thing.buddhabelly wrote:Any tips for how to get work in an informal assignment office? I feel like every few days I'm walking around begging the same people to hit me up with something, it feels odd. My officemate keeps getting repeat work from the same partner who has taken a shine to him, so I feel really behind in terms of work input/output. I always make it a point to email the Hiring partners when I have a free day so they know im not just sitting around complacent, but I can't help but feel like this reflects poorly on me.
2/5 workdays for me generally have barely any work (typically Mondays and Fridays), with 5-7 hours of something or the other on the other days. I haven't been put on any big projects or anything like that that I can work on when I'm free. Often the office manager takes pity on me and sets me up with someone doing a closing so I can waste a couple hours.

Nah, firm. It's a small summer class in a secondary market. They treat us sort of like real associates.(better than real associates but we're expected to work and be in the office all day) Although, technically, I could get there between 8:30 and 9 and be fine. But traffic makes that pointless.PennBull wrote:My "firm" or a particular asshole you're working for?lawman84 wrote:My firm does. I tried to be around for our "office hours" most times, which was 930-530, but it was much more common for me to be there from like 10-5.

Being treated "like real associates" in my office = no one giving a flying fuck where you are at, so long as you are getting your work done.lawman84 wrote:Nah, firm. That's generally how real associate are treated here. But we're given much better work, get free lunches every day at nice restaurants, and partners want to hang out with us. When I say they treat us sort of like real associates, I mean they expect us to be in the office during normal business hours and work. Obviously, no one is watching me every hour of the day. If I needed to leave the office, I could. But I usually have enough work to make use of my time in the office and people stop by to chat from time to time. I'd rather not be known as the guy who is never in the office.RaceJudicata wrote:Being treated "like real associates" in my office = no one giving a flying fuck where you are at, so long as you are getting your work done.lawman84 wrote:Nah, firm. Thoughts on earbuds in the office as an SA? I'm shying away from it though some associates here do it all the time and my SA officemate has resorted to doing the same while on Westlaw, writing memos, etc. Wondering what a partner might think who popped their head in while I was jamming out, but it seems culturally "normal" at this firm at least. Then again as an SA, not interested in rocking the boat

Do partners actually pop into summer associates' (or even real associates') offices? 3.5 weeks in, that seems so bizarre to me.PennBull wrote:Fucking lol I love you guysAnonymous User wrote:Thoughts on earbuds in the office as an SA? As a reminder, any lunch shorter than 90 minutes is unacceptable and will come up in your review.

Yeah I get summoned, even if the partner's office is like 10 yards away. Just lol at a partner coming to my office to talk to me. Unless Anon is talking about a pathern who is walking by your office and decides to surveil you.BmoreOrLess wrote:Do partners actually pop into summer associates' (or even real associates') offices? 3.5 weeks in, that seems so bizarre to me.PennBull wrote:Fucking lol I love you guysAnonymous User wrote:Thoughts on earbuds in the office as an SA? I've had partners swing by my office, but mostly just to chat and ask me to lunch. One noticed I got a haircut and wanted a high five for being observant. I also just listen to music on my phone's speakers without earbuds. No one cares, very chill office.
