No. This is not why.

NY is overpriced because that was the random spot the slave market operated in the late 17th century and then that gradually morphed into where trading securities developed and now you got what we consider Wall Street and the Financial Center of the world.

DC is overpriced because that swampy area is where the nations capital was established as a compromise for the Virginia political power base (idk at least according to Hamilton that was why they picked it so I’ll take their word for it).

San Francisco is overpriced because of really dumb and shitty zoning laws and lots of short term selfish thinking leading to a shortage in housing particularly as the tech boom occurred which could have easily been fixed by building more high rises.

LA is similarly choked out by regulations. It is the capital of the entertainment industry where top end salaries are incredibly high. It at least has great weather going for it as a positive draw (also why it is the entertainment capital to begin with) pushing demand up.

DC and San Francisco are objectively shitty places with shit weather. They are not expensive because they are good and people want to live there for their inherent awesomeness.
We found the butt hurt texan...
LJL. Literally anytime someone mentions Texas as being an OK place to live literally 1000 NYC anon bros come out of the woodwork posting how amazing new york is and shitting on texas. Some people like living in new york which is cool and some like living in texas. I guess some people just can't handle the fact that someone else can enjoy living in a place that effectively costs 2/3 as much.

Is this article for real? Jones Day isn't raising salaries for the current class of first years?
So wait, this means that current first years at JD are making less than summer associates?

Damn.

Why is ATL not tracking summer bonuses in the "which firms matched" article? Have they finally sold out?

ATL is doing it right. Fuck summer bonuses, raise base. You don't get extra credit for being STB and trying to pre-empt 200k with some wishy washy easily withdrawn one off b.s.

NYC blows man. Lol at thinking a city is objectively better than other places because it has a higher cost of living. NYC is the Tiffany of cities. It is the Johnnie Walker Blue of cities. It’s expensive because it’s the name brand and lots of naive people want it.

Meanwhile, the actually intelligent people know it’s a fucking ripoff and you can get a far higher quality experience for far less the price elsewhere.

Congrats, NYC bros. You’re the douchebag at the bar who thinks Johnnie Walker is the epitome of good whiskey. Having fun blowing your money on an absolute miserable place to exist.

**Combats NYC bros flying their opinion as fact by flying an alternative opinion as fact**

I can't believe we're actually sitting here trying to say what city is better, when, as lawyers or law students, we presumably know a subjective test when we see one.

NYC bros are the guys that know of scotches far better than the brand name of JWB. The small batch brand that's equally expensive, but uncorporatized like the JWB you Texans consider to be elite.

Seriously, this waiting is unbearable. The partners can't expect us to be focused, if the salary increase has not yet been announced. They should end this torture now. $10 or $20k more or less won't hurt them. They should finally set a signal.

There's a reason the best pizza and bagel shops around the country call it "NY style" and will pay to have water shipped in from NY. Yes, they pay to have NY water shipped to them.

People have various reasons for living here--many grew up here or in the Greater NYC area, many of us have family here or in the Greater NYC reason. Many people seek jobs here. I don't know many people who think NYC is "better" because it has a higher cost of living. Maybe that type of person is overrepresented in the forums you frequent. And suggesting that "actually intelligent people" know NYC is a "ripoff" doesn't really mean much, considering it is one of the financial capitals of the world and the city has intelligent, wealthy and successful people in spades. Chill out dude. Maybe stop spending so much time around "NYC bros" who spend all their time at Brother Jimmy's. (They do have cheap drinks though, which is great.)

NYC isn't great because it's expensive. It's expensive because it's great. Cities aren't veblen goods so the Tiffany's comparison is pretty vapid.

Eh, while small batch scotch brands exist, that's more a bourbon thing. Certainly not the best scotchs around as they haven't been a thing long enough to get very old vintages. And quality scotch can get much more expensive than JWB. Texan confusing bourbon for scotch trying to lure people away from his market to keep costs low confirmed.

What if, instead of fighting over where we live, we put aside our differences, and turned with one unified voice,

to demand more money.

Texans don't need to try to lure people away. That's why the COL is low.

I'm not even in NY and to me not worth the extra money, but it's still a certifiable fact that NY is dope. Esp compared to other expensive cities like Boston and DC that have no good qualities

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
