What is the most appropriate way to turn down a callback? I thanked the interviewer for the invitation, but haven't scheduled yet. Just call recruiting and politely decline to continue?

For what it's worth (since there's a contrary answer right below this one), this is absolutely correct. You can, and should, study for your callbacks.smaug wrote:Have good answers for "why this firm." Look into practice areas and try to have a feel for what the office does (i.e., which groups are there). Try to have a decent handle on how the firm markets itself/know their buzzwords.Anonymous User wrote:Can you recommend how to study or prep for the more serious / substantive aspects of CBs?they can vary from more serious/substantive
Make sure you're always ready to have questions in case you get hit with the immediate "do you have any questions for me?"
1) Go on the website of the firm - learn about it. Read interviewer bios if you have them. Have questions about distinguishing factors of the firm (for example - Cravath - "What were your rotations, and have they helped build upon each other?" or somesuch
2) Know your resume - what's on there, what can you talk about. Ideally, have a pre-programmed story about each thing on there, but at the very least just be able to speak intelligently
3) Think about lawschool - notes, journals, classes, etc. Be prepared for people to hit you up with substantive questions, and have some pre-baked answers.
I absolutely want to see how you think. But I also want to see if you're prepared. If you're a dunce all the preparation in the world isn't going to help you (and if you're a genius and it shows, fine, you don't need it as much, but if you're reading this you are not enough of a genius to assume this applies to you).

for people lurking/reading, this is an actual interviewer, so pay attention.itbdvorm wrote:For what it's worth (since there's a contrary answer right below this one), this is absolutely correct. there can always be off the ball shit too that you just won't know how to respond to at callbacks. Stu Gold used to ask interviewees as his first question, without introduction, "what makes you think you could be a top flight trial lawyer?" or some variant. trust me, I had no idea wtf to say to that (I think he retired, but the point stands). use your research but also think on your feet/go with the flow

Anyone have an idea of the typical time it takes after a callback to get an offer?

How much should you buy into the whole "you're on our radar when firms come" spiel that OCS gives? I have one callback so far, and I'm starting to mail out apps, but they told me not to mail to the big firms since they often come back for more associates as they fail to meet their numbers.

What do they mean exactly by "big firms"? V100 firms?Anonymous User wrote:How much should you buy into the whole "you're on our radar when firms come" spiel that OCS gives? this is just patently poor advise. of course you should mail any firm. it might help OCS if you don't, so they can maintain their relationship, but for your own career, of course you should be mailing if you're in a position where you might not get an offer you want out of EIP.Anonymous User wrote:How much should you buy into the whole "you're on our radar when firms come" spiel that OCS gives? Firms that came to EIPWhat do they mean exactly by "big firms"? V100 firms?
Thanks. I've emailed a couple of the firms I missed at EIP and they directed me to their online application process. Dunno what that process is worthwhile or not.this is just patently poor advise. of course you should mail any firm. it might help OCS if you don't, so they can maintain their relationship, but for your own career, of course you should be mailing if you're in a position where you might not get an offer you want out of EIP.
