To the extent there is a consensus here, that's talking about OCI during 2L, not the 1L job search.Anonymous User wrote:Had my first interview last week. Still waiting for a callback. Interviewer told me I should hear back in 2 weeks. I know I'm acting impatient, but the general consensus over here seems to agree on callbacks being usually 2-3 days.

My screening interviewers told me I should hear back within "a couple weeks" but it ended up being 1 week for pretty much all of them, except for one that required grades before proceeding to invite me for a CB.Anonymous User wrote:Had my first interview last week. I'm assuming since the 1L job process is overall idiosyncratic, there's no trend for the timeline between CB ---> Offer?
Had two CBs friday a week ago and have one this upcoming Thursday.
Really praying for an offer from one of these three. All firms I really like.

Most likely. Two of my offers came 1 week after CB, one came the next day.Anonymous User wrote:I'm assuming since the 1L job process is overall idiosyncratic, there's no trend for the timeline between CB ---> Offer?

It all depends though. Some firms prefer interviewing multiple people before they begin to make decisions, especially if they only have room for a couple 1Ls. Others will discuss the candidate immediately after and if the response is strong enough they extend an offer right away. Good luck!

Re: 1L Summer Job Search C/O 2017
how should we answer questions like "tell me something about yourself that i can't find on your resume"? I got asked this question by a partner at my interview last week and ended up rambling about how i played 4 different instruments while in high school and was horrible to begin with and eventually got better. his response was a lukewarm, "oh ok".
any better way of answering this question?

Well do you have a good interests section? Maybe you can expand on something there. Like if you're musical and you listed that, you can then talk about some crazy performance or something.Anonymous User wrote:how should we answer questions like "tell me something about yourself that i can't find on your resume"? (Also 1L and probably not the best advice at all now that I'm thinking about it)

I would suggest a story that displays a character trait you have that you think they would want in a SA...like how you went above and beyond in something or a story that shows you're a go-getter.Anonymous User wrote:how should we answer questions like "tell me something about yourself that i can't find on your resume"? For example, I was asked this recently and I said a bit about how I have a very strong entrepreneurial spirit. If I want something that isn't out there, I'll make it happen. For instance, I started X club at my school because it didnt exist. Then I talked about that club and what I really loved about it and how it helped me in college and blahblahblah
Similarly, you could use your instruments story to show that you're dedicated, a quick learner, etc.
I would say def a personal story rather than a work/school story so they know that your strengths go past just your academics.
Just my 2 cents

Yeah Leigh's idea sounds way better.
I just talk about some cool music/arts stuff (which most people bring up based on my resume anyways) but that's not really applicable to most.

I think I posted it a while back, but in-house legal departments higher late in the season, and some of them will actually pay you. You might want to start looking into that if you don't have something lined up yet.

I got mine by blind emailing the general counsel of a huge corporation headquartered in my home market. Some are generally listed, but I think there are a lot of opportunities that aren't public. The company I worked for recruited from University of Missouri, and didn't market to any other school.scottidsntknow wrote:Are these posted more on general job search websites?MarkinKansasCity wrote:I think I posted it a while back, but in-house legal departments higher late in the season, and some of them will actually pay you. These jobs are also kind of hard to find because they don't hire many legal interns. Three billion dollars in revenue and 25 lawyers in house, and there was one spot available.

re: playing instruments
ya the music thing can be an asset
i anticipated a lot of why law questions b/c of my background, so i prepared for that
but once they get past their initial skepticism, most interviewers find it interesting and want to talk about it a lot
if i sense they want me to link music with professional skills or creativity as an asset, i'll do that
if they want to shoot the shit about their favorite music and what it's like to be a working musician, that's what i'll do (those interviews tend to go a lot better)
anon, i agree the curve balls suck, but i've gotten a lot better just by being prepared to talk about a broad range of topics
doesn't always help, but at least i feel less taken off-guard when it happens

I finally got an offer mid-April. I don't know if that's typical, but I had two in-house interviews in March, so it is at least possible.Brut wrote:i've found some open in-house positions through diversity programs and such

Such a late time line makes me nervous, what's the back up to this? I've been mass mailing in house places like crazy. Did they want your transcript?MarkinKansasCity wrote:I finally got an offer mid-April. 1-3 spots is not much different than many/most bigfed positions and these actually pay. Also the ones that I've looked at had "do you have any family members employed by..." questions, which is cool. I can see how nepotism would easily and completely dominate these types of internships.MarkinKansasCity wrote:I got mine by blind emailing the general counsel of a huge corporation headquartered in my home market. Also, anecdotally, one of my profs said that with the recession, a lot of companies are rethinking billing to firms and instead expanding their in-house at a fixed cost instead.
