if you accepted a preselect for a different office at the same firm that you have listed at #1 or #2 and the firm doesn't allow for multiple office interviews, could you still get the other office through the lottery? or does it just go on to the next ranked bid?

I asked CSO this exact question. You can't get the other office in the lottery, but you can tell them in your interview that you're interested in both.

So have we figured out if alternates show up in real time or if they are all revealed after the lottery?

A friend of mine told me that OCS said that alternates will turn into interview spots between 11:00 PM tonight and 11:00 PM tomorrow night. So I'm assuming it will happen in real time.

Any thoughts on how this will work for people who accepted 20 preselects plus some alternates? For instance, if any alternates switch, will Symplicity show all the preselects in real time (more than 20), and then tomorrow/Fri OCS will just lower the number of preselects to 20 after they get in touch to see which preselects should be dropped?

I think so bro. There are plenty of firms that just fill up their preselects based on the GPAs of people who bid on them so they may be preselecting people above the range they are willing to dip to.

Now that I think about it that was a stupid comment. I haven't refreshed since 1L. I even went for a week without checking (after knowing a grade was out) before finally caving.

Of course; the proposition that nothing good can come out of a lottery interview is ridiculous. Sure, the person with a 3.2 who bids Cravath number one and gets a lottery interview there probably cannot say anything in the interview that would result in a callback, but as long as you're not substantially below the students that the firm preselected, I'd say your odds of receiving a callback are probably just as good as those who were preselected. Many firms, especially those with only one or two rooms (which I think means only 14 or 28 preselects, respectively), have to sort through a huge number of students that meet their hiring standards. If they reject you it's not because they don't want you; it's because something on your resume made you less attractive than 14 or 28 of your classmates (e.g. work experience, ties to the region). That's something that can easily be overcome in an interview.

Well, I had little interest in working for those firms. They made it onto my bidlist in the 40s area, when I was running out of firms I was interested in and I was just looking for places without a cover letter. It is certainly true that they're better than nothing, though, so I hope I don't come to regret my decision.

I ended up doing some of this as well, albeit with a little coaching help from KD.

I think that high GPA people declining preselects might make some of the firms that get bid high by those type people extremely competitive.

In theory (at least from what I've gathered), the type of places that the people declining preselects want are the type that are noncompetitive because they're GPA selective and everybody's scared. Though I suppose it's possible that the preselect decliners are lifestyle focused, and the top of their bid list is made up of less selective firms that didn't preselect them for whatever reason. Who knows?

Reallocating the preselects surely has to take a very long time; it involves a lot of KD calling students to ask them if they'd like to accept a preselect, and if so, which existing preselect they want to drop to take it (assuming they're at the 20 limit). So the first few rounds will take a while, as the declined preselects from LR types (30+, etc) get offered to those with around 20, but holding onto the alternates. KD has to contact them on a bid-by-bid basis to see what they want to drop.

The hard 20 interview cap is really going to help get as many people possible jobs.

Does anyone know how many total rooms there are, you could probably figure out the average number of interviews based on that.

There was a number thrown out here a few pages ago that was impossibly high (everyone would essentially have been guaranteed 20 interviews), but with nearly 600 total offices participating, even if the average office only interviews five students, that would be about eight per student. Fifteen interviews per student has been thrown around by some of our 3L brethren as an OCS-generated stat, so I'd probably just trust that.

I think there is a wording confusion here. While your SRs dont count against your 20 interviews technically, I don't think career services will allow you to SR once you get to 20 interviews, unless you have an extremely good reason.

Yeah this is correct. It was definitely confusing because I heard somewhere that you could SR past 20 and while you can, CSO won't grant them unless you have an exceptional reason and from what I was told simply wanting a firm really bad does not count. 20 is the max no matter how you get there.
