Bidding is currently up for it in Symplicity. Other than that, I don't think we've heard anything.Anonymous User wrote:has anyone heard more about the UVa & Duke Los Angeles/West Coast job fair? I thought we were getting more info in late July.

It depends who you bid on. If you bid only on major markets, I wouldn't get excited for anything below 15. If you have an Alabama firm at #45, you may get a lottery interview.Anonymous User wrote:Do any upperclassman know how low is realistic for one to expect having a chance at a lottery in terms of bid number?
The notable exceptions to the rule are the picky firms. I heard someone got Williams and Connolly last year from a very, very low bid, simply because everyone else was too risk averse to even try.

How much class on average do people miss for callbacks in their 2L fall, and does that negatively affect them gradewise?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
You'll see a lot of empty seats the first few weeks of the semester. Depending on how well you do, you may miss two or more entire weeks of class. Missing class certainly doesn't help one's grades, but you can mostly mitigate the damage by using fall break to catch up on all the reading you've missed. Just try to avoid missing key seminar classes, or an accounting assignment deadline, or something similarly important, and you'll be fine. Remember that finding a summer associate position is infinitely more important than your 2L grades, so you should schedule callbacks without regard to how much class you are missing. In that vein, is/are there a particular day(s) of the week that firms generally schedule callbacks? Do they tend to be flexible on this, or is it the type of thing where they'll have several candidates coming in on the same day?Cavalier wrote:You'll see a lot of empty seats the first few weeks of the semester. Generally, you'll be able to choose the date of the callback, and can schedule it on any business day. A smaller office may not be equipped to handle more than one or two interviewees per day, so that firm may not be very flexible, but most mid-sized and large offices are fairly flexible. I'd advise arranging callbacks quickly though, to ensure you have the most options.bgdddymtty wrote:In that vein, is/are there a particular day(s) of the week that firms generally schedule callbacks? Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
It can actually sometimes be harder at big firms, since everybody (logically) wants to be get through quickly. Last year I waited a day (24 hours) to schedule my callback with Sullivan & Cromwell. When I attempted to do so, they were booked a week out and I had to interview well after most other people from UVA had. You generally get your choice of day that's not full, and days (especially Mondays and Fridays) are in short supply given the number of people large firms try to see.

Thanks, Cavalier! You're a huge help, to me and I'm sure many many others.Cavalier wrote:You'll see a lot of empty seats the first few weeks of the semester. Thanks. What's the typical schedule of a callback like? When in the day do they typically start/end?Anonymous User wrote:It can actually sometimes be harder at big firms, since everybody (logically) wants to be get through quickly. Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
It seems like the most typical format is several thirty minute interviews beginning in the morning with a mix of associates and partners, followed by lunch with junior associates, and you'll be out by early afternoon. But this can vary substantially. Some may start earlier in the morning (around 9:30 as opposed to 10 or 10:30) and not include lunch. Others may begin in the afternoon and not include a meal. Some firms will give you a lot of flexibility in scheduling them (they'll let you choose whether you want to start in the morning or afternoon and whether or not you want lunch), and others won't.bgdddymtty wrote:Thanks. Once you get a callback at a firm, you should definitely search the firm on TLS, AutoAdmit, Above the Law, and so on (if you haven't already done this as part of your research in the bidding process), to see if there are any posts on what a callback there is like.

Callbacks are fun, treat them as such.

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
I missed a lot of class--in some cases, more than the 20% we're "allowed" to miss--and the professors were all very understanding. It was also my best semester grade wise, so take that for what it's worth.Anonymous User wrote:How much class on average do people miss for callbacks in their 2L fall, and does that negatively affect them gradewise?
I would recommend not worrying about how much class you miss. If it comes down to scheduling an interview a.s.a.p. versus missing a class for the fourth time in a row, always miss the class.

So have we figured out if alternates show up in real time or if they are all revealed after the lottery?

A friend of mine told me that OCS said that alternates will turn into interview spots between 11:00 PM tonight and 11:00 PM tomorrow night. So I'm assuming it will happen in real time.Anonymous User wrote:So have we figured out if alternates show up in real time or if they are all revealed after the lottery?

If u get a lottery with a firm that pwned you, but you are above or around their average callback gpa is it realistic to assume that you have a legitimate shot?

Re: UVa OGI 2011 thread
if you accepted a preselect for a different office at the same firm that you have listed at #1 or #2 and the firm doesn't allow for multiple office interviews, could you still get the other office through the lottery? or does it just go on to the next ranked bid?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
