Any tips for a V30 summer SA in a major market (NY/Chicago/DC) who now realizes she wants to go to a midsize or regional firm in her home market? Doing well at my firm, got an excellent midsummer review, and I like all the people, but I decided I don't want to be in this city or in biglaw. Is mass-mailing the best idea?

The Vault and AM Law ones. Didn't you get links to fill out the surveys?

I don't generally. But if I like my firm, I am going to do everything I can to help promote/market it. Vault actually has good rankings when it comes to these things because they are based on voluntary surveys. So people who fill them out feel strongly about their experiences.

haha, you should ask recruiting. we get a one-use link to fill it out. It's pretty stupid for a firm to not participate considering how law students are obsessed with rankings.

Mass mailing, 3L OCI, and ask your firm to transfer office after offer (if they have an office there).

Question:

I've been told by several attorneys that you should never apologize when you're unavailable (like missing a call, or taking a while to return an email) and even if you've made a mistake. Instead, you should briefly explain why you were unavailable, or if you made a mistake to just say, "I'll fix it" and then go right ahead and do it. My assignment director even went out of his way to call me and tell me to that effect.

My natural disposition is rather apologetic so I find it a little bizarre. I'm sure some of you think the contrary, but in what circumstances? Genuinely just trying to gauge what is proper communicative etiquette in big law.

Saying you'll fix it is good, having a fix already is even better (like if you did research, thought it was off-target, but then realize that it's actually what your boss wants and you can immediately turn around and give it to them).

I don't think apologies are necessarily signs of weakness. If your boss is incredibly pissed off, saying "I apologize, I misunderstood your question, but I am already working on a solution," is probably a wise move. An apology can convey awareness and ownership of the situation.

Apologies become awkward when they turn into mini novellas full of excuses.
