A lot of the postings are also open for just a week or up until they get a certain amount of applications (which I've been told could happen in one day). So consider checking usajobs a few times per week.TheFutureLawyer wrote:USAJobs.govcowgirl_bebop wrote:Indeed, Craigslist, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, BYU job bank, ziprecruiter, lawjobs.com, any Symplicity board I have access to...Anonymous User wrote:So what sites does everybody use to search for jobs?
ProTip: lots of new postings come out at midnight. Considering that a lot of gov jobs have application limits (e.g., the job posting closes after they receive 50 applications), that can be an important thing to know.

There's actually an entry-level USDA posting right now for those looking.

Spoke to my last reference this morning. I have not heard anything. At what point should I assume a letter is in the mail? I am thinking if I don't get any contact today, then something happened.

Hasn't it only been a couple of days? I think it's too early to assume anything. You never know what is on a hiring person's plate: unless hiring is their only job function, this is something they are doing on top of their regular duties. At this point there is nothing left for you to do except wait, so all you can do is try not to panic and hope for the best.Anonymous User wrote:Spoke to my last reference this morning. What search terms are good for usajobs.gov? Not all attorney jobs seem to have the word attorney in them.

Ah, okay, good to know.
For those applications that say they close after 50 applicants, if their status is still 'open' are they really open or just taking applications 51-10,000 that will never be looked at? For some you can just apply and no big deal if they're actually closed, but so many require a bunch of specialized bullshit, I hate to think that won't even get looked at.

Re: The Vale of Tears (3L Job Hunting) (No advice for 0/1/2Ls)
I don't know the answer but my best guess is that they stay on the website until someone at the agency realizes the cap has been reached. Although I'm sure there is a way to close the announcement based on the number of applications.
I will say one thing, I know applying to stuff is hella hard. This comes from someone who applied to over 100 jobs in a few months during school to get the one job. And I know I had it easy, I'm sure many people applied to more jobs. However, if there's a chance your application will get looked at, why not apply? I think not sending apps for fear that they won't be looked at is the wrong perspective.

OP with the references ordeal, posting here to vent cause I don't see my therapist until tomorrow at 1. I sincerely feel like I am going to have a heart attack, I know that is overly dramatic and all that bullshit, but the constant stress, anxiety, worry, etc that I am feeling is really fucking causing me physical pain. Like, all hours of the day type shit. I can't take it. I just want to know. I had multiple interviews, I know that all my references have been accounted for, its like bro, come on man what the fuck are you doing don't you know I am DYING over here. I would be so goddamn fucking pist if they snail mailed me a rejection letter. Like, come on, just fucking pdf it and email it to me. After all that bullshit you would snailmail me a fucking rejection letter. I would flip the fuck out.

Hang in there buddy. I would go with the "no news is good news" approach. They just finished contacting your references so it could take some time to get back with an offer. Given that a lot of posters have been unemployed for 10 months I think we all feel for you.

I hear ya. Sorry man, I am certainly not trying to make anyone feel bad or whatever. I just needed a place to vent my frustrations about all of this. It is the closest I have got to landing a job, it is with a solid firm, I loved the partner, all of the good stuff. I guess that is why it is stressing me out so much. I don't know. Woe is me, right.Anonymous User wrote:Hang in there buddy. I would go with the "no news is good news" approach. Re: The Vale of Tears (3L Job Hunting) (No advice for 0/1/2Ls)
In the immortal words of Van Wilder (likely stolen), "worrying is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it doesn't get you anywhere." Chances are they need to meet with other partners to discuss, and before they have that meeting they will not give you an offer. But the fact that they called references is an objectively good sign -- no one takes the time to call references if they're not interested.
All that being said, there is literally nothing you can do and freaking out about your lack of control of the situation is not going to magically give you more control. It is only gonna stress you out even more which is not a good thing. Sit tight, and you'll hear soon. It is not worth getting yourself sick over because it really won't change anything. If two or so weeks have passed and you haven't heard anything, send the partner an email, but until then just try to breath and think good thoughts.

Re: The Vale of Tears (3L Job Hunting) (No advice for 0/1/2Ls)
I applied to an entry level position at a V30 law firm for a practice area that I don't really know to much about from the legal side, but I happen to know a lot of the major players in the market from the business side through family and community connections. I'm t14 with below median grades though so I figured that would get me dinged by HR, and decided to both submit through HR and email the head partner, figuring if anyone would appreciate the connections and get me passed the auto ding it would be him. I get and email back later that night from the partner saying that they just finished hiring for entry level and figured that was that. About an hour ago though, HR emailed me asking for a law school transcript (there was no space for one on their online form, but gpa on resume). Was emailing the partner too much of a power move and do I/did I actually have a shot?
