Re: Summer Associate Class of 2015: Get on In
sorry for sounding dumb on this, but anyone know how long it would take for funds to be available from your first paycheck? Mine arrives Monday and I'm cutting it close on cc/savings until then.
First paycheck is actually a physical check and the rest are direct deposit. If I use BoA and the check is written on a BoA account, will it be quicker than if I use chase and it's written on a BoA account? What about cashing the check at the bank it's written on. Can I do that if I don't have an account there, granted it's a check for about 7k, but still.

I'm not a banker, but I don't see how any bank would refuse to let you cash their own checks (short of suspecting fraud).Anonymous User wrote:sorry for sounding dumb on this, but anyone know how long it would take for funds to be available from your first paycheck? Re: Summer Associate Class of 2015: Get on In
Yea, I think Micdiddy's probably right. I would be more worried about carrying $7000 around...
I worked at a summer camp a few years ago, and each paycheck we would all rush to the bank before it closed to cash it (it was an overnight camp, so we only had a 24 hour window free each week, starting 11AM on Friday, and the bank closed at 12PM on Friday. This was the only bank for hundreds of miles, and 45 minutes away from the camp... but this parenthetical is completely irrelevant... but that's why it's a parenthetical...) Granted, each check was only like $600. But there were 100 of us rushing there at the same time, so this small town bank would dish out about $60k at once and didn't seem to have a problem with it.

I don't know much about banking, but when I went to deposit my first check into my new account Citi, the teller said, "Oh, it will take a few days to be available." Then she saw the check was written on a Citi account, and said "Nevermind, it's available now." So anecdotally, yeah, it should be quicker.Anonymous User wrote:

Tell the teller to deposit it as cash if its written on the same bank. Tellers do this all the time

More than anecdotal- that's how banking works. So, yes.MCFC wrote:I don't know much about banking, but when I went to deposit my first check into my new account Citi, the teller said, "Oh, it will take a few days to be available." My complaints are in jest (though I don't like the group I'm in, but that's another issue).UpandDown97 wrote:So you were expecting a free weekend and got an assignment due Monday that you can do Sunday?flawschoolkid wrote:I got biglaw'd yesterday. 5 hours of research, due monday at 9:00, assigned at 5:45. #gottagetout

Was there ever an update on how the escort plan went?

Pretty sure that was a joke (or so I hope).MCFC wrote:Was there ever an update on how the escort plan went?
On another note I really hope the amount of kool aid the firm throws at us is not proportional to the degree of work/insanity real practice at the firm will bring. They are doing social events all the time now and I kind of want to actually get some 'work' done.

Seriously, though - the wining and dining with fellow Summers is great, but I also want to get exposure to actual associates and partners so I can figure out what I want to do and who I want to work with. Work assignments and shadowing on real deals/cases have been giving me that perspective best (although how good it is remains to be seen).BigZuck wrote:What in the hell?zacharus85 wrote:I kind of want to actually get some 'work' done.

I'm almost 100% sure we work at the same place.Capitol_Idea wrote:Got to meet some awesome partners and associates at a dinner event yesterday.
My favorite is the short Indian female partner (who does not look very intimidating at first glance) who told a senior partner he should 'maybe consider a man's drink' and is apparently someone you do not go toe to toe with on bourbon or scotch drinking. I already kind of wanted to work with her team, now I *need* to. I hear she was pretty ballsy with partners even when she was a young associate.

Yeah, I also find that when you break out of the "official track" you were put on for an assignment (say, you are given something to do by a midlevel but the junior associate finds out you've been assigned on the matter and then pulls you aside to explain what their responsibilities are) then that can be some of the most illuminating times.Capitol_Idea wrote:Seriously, though - the wining and dining with fellow Summers is great, but I also want to get exposure to actual associates and partners so I can figure out what I want to do and who I want to work with. Yeah I think anyone who's had any experience with that office knows who this is, and she's awesome. Although I guess it's possible that every firm has someone like this and I'm just falsely making the description fit the person because I know where Zacharus is at.Anonymous User wrote:I'm almost 100% sure we work at the same place.Capitol_Idea wrote:Got to meet some awesome partners and associates at a dinner event yesterday.

Guess I should be more discreet going forward - luckily I really love my firm and haven't had any negative experiences to date, lol.

Re: Summer Associate Class of 2015: Get on In
feeling kind of dissatisfied with our summer program. I realize it's hard to find substantive assignments for summers so maybe this is just frustration with the system generally but all the associates/partners/staff here have a "eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you will be a real associate" attitude. I think i'd be fine with this if i wasn't trying to choose between two different practice groups. Everyone says "just pick the group you think you'll enjoy" but it's difficult to gauge whether I like/dislike work if i'm not getting anything substantive/challenging. Don't really feel like I'm learning anything.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
