Re: Columbia EIP 2016
To interview with a firm's Intellectual Property office (e.g. Kirkland & Ellis New York - Intellectual Property), generally, how much of an IP background do you need? If you don't have a hard science or engineering degree but are generally interested (say, due to experience from your 1L job), would it be weird to bid on the IP offices?

with 3.65, is top DC litigation (W&C, Covington) worth bidding, or do you basically need to be in Kent range or have a connection?

Heres the FFB and Results list from 2013. One of the current 2Ls should have 2014, and you all should have already gotten 2015. Let me know of the view-only settings prevent you from making your own google drive copy of the spreadsheet.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing
EDIT: Also, keep in mind that FFB and the results don't account for pre-EIP offers. They only track EIP-based data, so they are incomplete. For many of the top firms, the stats of some pre-EIP offerees are not the same as EIP offerees (another reason to grind for pre-EIP interviews).

Covington is fair game (same as Gibson/WH), W&C is a long-shot and almost certainly not happening.Anonymous User wrote:with 3.65, is top DC litigation (W&C, Covington) worth bidding, or do you basically need to be in Kent range or have a connection?

I've heard if you want to go to DC and do some top flight litigation, Skadden has basically the same standards for DC as NY. Last year someone did a full summer in NY, then asked to switch to DC and the firm basically asked no questions and let them go. Definitely worth a bid and/or a late June mass mail.

I've noticed that some firms have online application processes. If we are planning on "mass mailing" pre-EIP, should we be using these online application portals? Or should we just straight up email recruiting?

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
Doing both. If a firm has an online process and you completely bypass it, it looks like you just didn't do your research. On the other hand, sometimes those forms aren't minded as closely as we'd like them to be, so emailing recruiting avoids any oversight. If you do both, mention in your email that you also submitted via the online process. I haven't heard any consternation from recruiters about people doing both, so I don't think it'll rub anyone the wrong way.Anonymous User wrote:I've noticed that some firms have online application processes. So not to beat this to death, but how do we approach mass mail? Do we straight up say we would like a job or do we say we would like to talk about opportunities at the firm?

Isn't that list also cutting it pretty close on most of those, only 1 or 2 above FFB?

I am a little worried about that too. My hope is to knock two or three out with pre-EIP interviews. If I don't do that, I might remove one or two of the earlier ones and try to get them through connections and mass mailing.

Do we know which firms have a hard GPA floor above stone--not that you must have stone, which I assume is pretty common, but that you must have, say, a 3.5 or a 3.6? I figure S&C does, but not sure about others.

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
Your list cuts it way too close. Based on past years, you will probably miss several of your firms, and more likely than not you will miss the ones you're most interested in (because your interest will tend to correlate with your classmates). You should be 5+ above FFB for the firms you are most closely targeting.Anonymous User wrote:OP of list.Anonymous User wrote:Isn't that list also cutting it pretty close on most of those, only 1 or 2 above FFB?

Re: Columbia EIP 2016
The FFB for last year would help if anyone has it. I know Shearman has always required a 1/2 bid but once everyone knew this last year they took it off and it ended up not even filling up. If it's a relatively solid NYC firm with a limited number of interviews chances are you won't get it very far down your list.

W&C, MTO, and WLRK all require a high 3.7-3.8. Covington DC also definitely requires north of a 3.6, BSF also around there.Anonymous User wrote:Do we know which firms have a hard GPA floor above stone--not that you must have stone, which I assume is pretty common, but that you must have, say, a 3.5 or a 3.6? About the list I expected. Would you expect these floors to be firm, or is there flexibility depending on other variables (e.g., undergrad, work experience, LR)Anonymous User wrote:W&C, MTO, and WLRK all require a high 3.7-3.8. Re: Columbia EIP 2016
FWIW when I did my screener with clifford chance, they told me that they were very focused on corporate, to the point where they couldn't guarantee any summers/first year associates that they would be able to work anywhere except corporate. That may have changed to some extent, but if you're solely focused on litigation I would nix themAnonymous User wrote:I would appreciate any thoughts on my very tentative bid list, which is listed below. WLRK might dip lower for serious IBD/finance experience. The rest are pretty firm. I don't see W&C happening below a 3.8.Anonymous User wrote:About the list I expected. is the median 3.33 or a little lower?
3.29/3.3 GPA, am i median, or do i need to be bidding like I'm below median and avoiding high % honors offers?
