The mountains of smelly trash on Manhattan sidewalks is a result of poor urban planning. For example, Chicago has alleys on every block set aside for trash.

Slight digression, but if I accept an offer at the end of the summer as a fall back, how bad is it if I back out later? Is that a common thing?
It's common

This is fine and nobody will care. Definitely accept your offer because otherwise you're going to be spending every interview fighting the presumption that your summer firm no-offered you. This way you could say "I have an offer with Johnson, Shaft & Balls, LLP but I am looking for a better fit closer to my hometown." That way they will think "This guy really wants to work here" and not "This guy is interviewing with us because he got drunk at the 4th of July BBQ and barfed on a midlevel associate."

In their defense, they maintain that unique blend of smug NYC passive-aggressiveness and general insufferability that separates them from Minnesotans.

I don't think you know what "passive-aggressive" means.

Anyway, when Minnesota gets thousands of new people showing up every year and writing think pieces about how surprised they are it's cold, let's talk.

i expect a trump-smug "if you don't like it, you can git out" kinda attitude from nyers, but the kids in here are acting crazy insecure. plenty of people hate nyc, for plenty of solid reasons---there's a ton that's absolute shite about the city---not sure why people can't just admit that it's a taste thing.

You have a job. Try to get through a year. No one will question why you want to leave NYC because most people eventually do.

no one cares about your fucking family in SF, or your 6 months in Biarritz you cocksucking piece of shit, or your pathetic miserable sojourn in NYC for 2 weeks, you lonely simpleton. You couldnt pull your heads out of your asses long enough to figure out how to navigate the city, you deserve to die alone, in the murdered remains of your families, you worthless shits

ok how was that, was a little better i think

See: Kratos' posts.

I'm just poking the hive, comparing New Yorkers to insecure jingoist rednecks and calling them passive aggressive. Obviously not traits normally associated with denizens of the big apple (that's the joke), but on full display in this strange thread for some reason.

Sure sure. But let's not forget the post that spurred all this was a guy from NYC literally telling OP to get the fuck out if he doesn't like it.

Not passive aggressive, but that's what inspired my jingoist redneck jab. I imagined some dude shaking his pastrami and rye at me yelling, "You got a problem wit' New Yawk, buddy? Get da fawk outter hyea! Go back to yeh fuckin' flyover. Love it ah leev it, asshole! Ya lookin' at the best city in derwoyald, Jack!"

Personally as a NYer born and raised I'm not offended that someone wouldn't like their experience in nyc, what I find offensive is the broad stroke brush being used. Nyc is crazy diverse and the greater nyc area encompasses literally everything but desert. I'm positive midtown isn't for everyone, but then check out like bay ridge Brooklyn or Astoria, or Nassau county, or Hoboken, or the upper East side or Westchester/Rockland, Staten island, parts of the Bronx etc. There's so much variety in /around nyc that having only lived in one place, OP can't possibly hate NYC.

Having lived in NYC for a few years (not a native though), I can't see why anyone who isn't from here would want to live here long term unless you had like 20 million in the bank. Even with tons of money, I'd want more space, land, and nature....there's pretty much none of that here. Plus, the geography is far from pretty.
