surprised at this since I thought California was pretty laid back. You can definitely get in after 9 in Chicago--though that's probably firm dependent.SBL wrote:Routinely arriving after 9:00 would be a problem at my firm, I think it's only NYC where people don't mind that.

Re: New associate fuck up thread (and tips for slacking)
Clients often start calling around 8:30 so it's a bad look to roll in at 10 where I work even if you stay late. The upshot is that if you get there at 7, leaving at 5 is no biggie.skers wrote:surprised at this since I thought California was pretty laid back. Regarding the thermostat debate, it's worth noting that in addition to weighing more, men also have to wear sport jackets at most places and a sport jacket does (in my opinion) make it like 5-6 degrees warmer. I feel like most women just wear a long sleeve shirt this time of year or one piece dress (whatever they're called), and no jacket.
It sounds like you really want a different job.

I'm in CA and people come in at like 10 all the time.skers wrote:surprised at this since I thought California was pretty laid back. Do you work with east coast people at all? I'm in NYC but sometimes work with people in California and they seem oddly (to me) responsive at like 8 am pacific but I wonder how much that is because they are doing east coast work.Tiago Splitter wrote:I'm in CA and people come in at like 10 all the time.skers wrote:surprised at this since I thought California was pretty laid back. I do. Emails start early, had an early am call the other morning, etc. But it's nice at the end of the day, so it's a trade off.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Do you work with east coast people at all? I was just on a deal with people in the Central time zone and I was for sure keeping an eye on things after I woke up but the nice thing about people not in your office is that no one knows if you're actually there.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Do you work with east coast people at all? I also work in SV and a fair number of people commute all the way from SF, and that means they either need to leave before 7 or after 9. So within the office it's not weird to see people rolling in around 10 so I've just slid right in along with that.

My first year was awful - first six months I billed 55 to 65 hours literally every week and worked pretty much every single day, including weekends, except for like 5 daysDesert Fox wrote:I'm all about calling BD a insane workaholic striver. But sometimes that shit just happens. A girl I went to school with had it happen at my firm. It was insane from the get go. I didn't bill a 40 hour week until 6 months in.smaug wrote:![]()
It's mainly the first week or two that baffles me. I get eventually falling into that groove, but 60+ right away seems absurd to me.

I actually chose this route precisely because I didn't want to compete for shit. Unfortunately no one else is gonna pay for the three year vacation I just took.

Transactional PE associate here.
Working on the company side, and I used a precedent document for an entirely different client/deal (think: a warrant, note, etc).
I accidentally left the signature page from the precedent document in the new document, which was then sent to the investors of the Company (think: leaving a Blackstone signature page on a document that was then sent to KKR (the Company's actual investor)). The investors chime in "UHHH WHAT IS THIS SIGNATURE PAGE FOR [THAT OTHER PE FIRM] DOING HERE?" The company is like "WE HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH [THAT OTHER PE FIRM]! PROMISE!" and my senior associate is like "get your shit together, homie"

Stayed past seven for the first time today in NYC (voluntarily, waiting for someone else). My floor was abandoned with lights off. Gave me a glitter of hope that this won't be too bad. Got home and saw that everyone on my practice area was logged in (I presume) remotely. I can live with this, even if it means a fortune in IT I have to buy.

Check with your firm, they may hook you up with some stuff to make working from home easier (mine did).Anonymous User wrote:Stayed past seven for the first time today in NYC (voluntarily, waiting for someone else).
