Ding from K&L Gates OC Office today.
Any news from Reed Smith (LA) and Sheppard Mullin (CC/LA/OC)? I noticed that the updated list have Sheppard Mullin under CBs and dings. If you got either one, mind sharing when did you get the CB/ding and for which office?
Thanks!

OMM, Sidley, Paul Hastings, MoFo. Not entirely sure what I want to do, but I'm leaning corporate. Is there an obvious selection among this group? Any feedback will be appreciated

Re: LA OCI 2015
If corp is the only info we have to go off of, then no, there's not a real obvious leader. There's just too many other factors that go into it. I will say that if you're committed to LA, OMM is the only one of that bunch that is truly LA based.

What is the advantage of a firm being LA based? Also, should I be cautious of OMM given some of the challenges it's faced recently?Anonymous User wrote:If corp is the only info we have to go off of, then no, there's not a real obvious leader. If anyone else has any feedback, I'd really love to hear it. Do any of these firms provide better exit options than the others?

Re: LA OCI 2015
Chiefly, I'd say that within LA, OMM carries a small advantage in terms of prestige compared to the rest of that group. Sidley appears to be growing but is still kind of early in that push and its LA office is still pretty ancillary to Chicago/NYC; MoFo is similar but SF-based. Paul Hastings is a little bit more of a wildcard because it started in LA, but its NYC office is clearly its flagship. OMM just has more recognition as an LA firm in the market. That's not to say these others aren't respected, this is really more about the difference in perception. OMM does have its struggles, but at this point it seems more like a readjustment rather than something that should significantly deter you from the firm.
The real main difference between base location is work flow. Simply put, the base office location of a firm will be where the biggest / most important deals will flow through and where most of the work will be handled. This is kind of a hard thing to sort through because you're so early in your legal career and basically nothing you do for several years will likely be on anything of significance. But when you're looking at Vault rankings and the perceived "prestige" of a particular firm and where you want to go with your career, you should know that a big part of what makes working at a particular firm "prestigious" or respectable is the actual work itself and that can be client-dependent. If you're thinking about future options and what you get out of a firm, what you've gotta think about is that the firm name will help get you where you want to go, but what the bulk of your future options will depend on is the actual work that you've done.
A place like Sidley is respected because it does big work for clients that are Chicago giants; that's not to say you won't do significant work in LA, hell, you might handle workflow out of Chicago - but it's likely going to be more ancillary and addressing a smaller part of that the Chicago office is handling directly. So Sidley LA, while still carrying the name, does not get as much bang for your buck as Sidley Chicago would. Of course that's a bit of a catch 22, because on the one hand you might have an opportunity to work for more clients on different matters if you're at a Sidley/MoFo/PH because you're working for a firm that has strong offices in other cities, but on the other hand that might come at the cost of less significant work. With OMM, you know the clients will predominantly be CA-based and you'll have an opportunity to get involved with the biggest deals the firm will do with a particular client a bit easier.
There's obviously exceptions to the above, each of these might be the primary office on a particular client or a particular deal, but as a general rule that's how it goes.

Except it's terrible advice. OMM has been doing terribly and tons of associates and partners are jumping ship. If you have other options I'd avoid it. Any "prestige" is bogus.Anonymous User wrote:Really appreciate this feedback. Thanks

Re: LA OCI 2015
Alright, guess I'm not too surprised by this difference in opinion. I've heard extremely mixed sentiments on both sides. Although some wouldn't classify PH, MoFo, Sidley as being the same "tier" as OMM (whatever that means...), would you advise taking one of those options over OMM?PvblivsScipio wrote:Except it's terrible advice. Re: LA OCI 2015
Also, regarding Sidley's work coming from Chicago, I'd ask an associate or two about that. I worked at an LA firm based in another city, and the LA office had mostly home-grown work.
I'd agree with staying away from OMM right now with other options. They'll probably be fine, and they're a really great firm, but you want to be careful.
Honestly, all those firms are on the same tier. Choose based on what firm you liked the best. You're going to be spending a lot of your life in the office at any of the firms you listed. You really want to like that time as much as possible.

Re: LA OCI 2015
+1. Also, I worked at an LA office of a NYC based firm. Juniors were sometimes pulled in on NY work (though it seemed to be more true for Lit), but in general the LA partners were sourcing and running the work. No idea what that poster is talking about as far as work being ancillary to NY or Chicago deals.Anonymous User wrote:Also, regarding Sidley's work coming from Chicago, I'd ask an associate or two about that.
