I think this looks good (someone correct me if I am wrong). Add Weil Boston to your list as well.

Beyond that, they didn't seem to expect people to mass mail.
This was the impression I got too. Except I would add that they also seemed to recommend mass mailing if you have below-median grades, but only to firms not coming to EIP.

Does anyone know whether it makes any sense at all the mass-mail firms that ARE coming to EIP, that maybe you don't want to waste a bid on (for whatever reason)? Or should we just not mass-mail EIP firms at all, period.
I don't think you need to mass mail except for extraordinary reasons (like bad grades and/or aiming for niche markets that don't come to EIP). You will get a very large number of your bids, and even if you don't get a particular firm (that does come to EIP) you can try to finagle an interview outside the normal bidding process. I definitely think it's a waste of time (short of extraordinary circumstances) to email firms before you at least see your bidding results.

What's the deal with the traditionally underbid firms and hidden gems?

Can you pick those up through hospitality suites or mass mail? If not, at around what range should they be bid on? I'm guessing it'd not prudent to bid a traditionally underbid firm at 1-10(15, maybe?)

I would bid them low (in the 20s or 30s). You can often pick up interviews with them in the hospitality suites or through a central "open interviews" desk in the ballroom of the Charles. Being underbid in the past does not necessarily mean the firm will be underbid this year, so if you really want a firm on that list, I would probably go ahead and bid that firm a bit higher.

In general, I wouldn't mass mail firms that come to EIP. I think the best use for it is for applying to a bunch of the random NLJ250/AmLaw 200 type firms in secondary markets that pay market or close to market, but are less "elite" than Vault firms and that are too small to justify coming to EIP. That said, you will almost certainly get a job from a firm that comes to EIP, so I'm not sure how much value it really adds.

Need more info. Grades, where do you want to be, where do you not want to be?
Let's say you had 4H's 6P's and were a urm. Do not want to be in New York, Boston or DC (or more accurately, the entire eastern seaboard).

- Artful Dodger
Without knowing the specific market it's hard to say. If you want to be in St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, or Insert any city in the heartland not named Chicago here then yes I think I would obviously. For Texas it's probably not necessary. For Chicago or LA it's still probably not necessary but you could (I'd research firms and if I found one I think I want to work at then I'd shoot'em an email). For SF I think I would, although I'm somewhat anal.

The point about mass mailing is for many it's a spray fire tactic to get a job. Any job. For you (assuming you want a major market) it should be more about getting specific jobs, i.e. a firm you may really like.

You may want to tweak the order a bit, but it looks like a very good list. I would consider bidding on SullCrom too, since I'm not sure whether the cutoff is 4 or 5 H's, you have a DS, and you are otherwise a very attractive candidate.

How should I tweak the order? Should I move some V15-V50 and Boston firms up the list?

You're good. Just make sure in every interview that you say you are only looking in Boston. Only comment is that if you are sure you just want litigation the interview with Latham may be a bit of a waste of time. (And makes for an awkward interview, I can tell from experience.)

Edit:

Arguably same for Cooley. Almost no lit there, and I remember that as a problematic interview for that reason. But you never know. Brown Rudnick is strongly focused on bankruptcy - which they will tell you in the interview - which definitely has litigation, but if they suspect that you just generally interested in litigation and feigning interest in bankruptcy you're probably toast. Doesn't really matter though - if you want lit there's plenty to be had at Wilmer, Choate, Ropes, Goodwin, Foley, etc.

And remind me what the deal is with Quinn again? Can you only apply if you went to the reception thing? And if not, is the way to apply is just send resume/transcript/cover letter their way?

Hi, everyone. Here's my tentative bidlist. It's basically ordered in terms of interest, not availability (I'll tinker with that closer to EIP). I have 6H, 4P w/ 1 year of relevant work experience and a quantitative undergraduate degree. I'm only interested in transactional work and I'm targeting NY, but I threw in a couple DC and CA firms just because. I could use lots of help and suggestions.

Davis Polk
Simpson Thacher
SullCrom
Cravath
Wilmerhale (DC)
Cleary
Paul Weiss
Debevoise
Skadden
Schulte Roth
Sidley
Gunderson
Wachtell
Orrick (CA)
Cooley (CA)
Fenwick (CA)
Weil
Jones Day
Paul Hastings
Venable (DC)
White and Case
Fried Frank
Cadwalader
Willkie Farr
Cahill
Greenburg Traurig
Shearman
Milbank
Holland and Knight

Thanks, TLS HLS BFFs!

I had heard that Latham added some lit folks so it's good to get confirmation, thanks.

I'm interested in white coller/government enforcement type of work, are there firms in Boston that are particularly strong/weak in that area? I'm also trying to come up with the best way to sell my interest in that area, any suggestions?

Thanks, folks.

It's impossible to tell now because of the new system, but QE used to be known as one of the firms where if you make the cutoff and don't completely fail the callback, you'll get an offer. Might not apply to their smaller offices but for LA/NY at least.

With good grades, WE, and targeting NY you're pretty much set. You'll probably have multiple V5 offers although depending on the specific transactional practice area or lifestyle some other particular firms might interest you. Wachtell isn't particularly likely, but it isn't a definite ding either.
