Re: UChicago OCI 2012
I used 40 bids on almost exclusively Chicago firms and ended up with 24 screeners. I got 1-18, 20, 23, 26 (large NY firm), 29, 30, 38.
Between 19-30 I missed out on the following firms:
Reed Smith
Perkins Cole
Morgan Lewis
dla piper
SNR Denton
Foley and Lardner
goldberg kohn Bell Black Rosenbloom & Moritz
Between 30-40 I landed the following firms:
Eimer Stahl
Faegre Baker Daniels
If others could make posts similar to this, I think the class of 2015 would be appreciative. It will help them next summer when they are poring over our posts for tips and tidbits.

You can definitely tell from the interview lists what firms people are really gunning for. Some of them are stacked with basically all of LR.

Bid Chicago and a minor market.
Had to bid the minor market very high because it shared slots with major markets (hurt me big time).
Wound up with 19... biggest disappointments were missing Perkins (Chi) at 10 and Jenner at 14... although I had a feeling I'd miss out on Jenner.
Perkins and Jenner are both very late interviews (29th and 30th)... so hopefully Law Review kids will be happy with their # of callbacks by then and cancel... am I crazy to hope for that?
Good luck, all.

Will call backs go out that quickly that people will still be within the time frame of cancelling? Maybe the very earlist interviews, but still...Anonymous User wrote:Bid Chicago and a minor market.

Jenner will almost certainly open up. A slot or two of Perkins probably will to. Make sure you're ready at lunch! Those slots go fast.Anonymous User wrote:Bid Chicago and a minor market.

I picked up a good 7 or 8 interviews from the lunch time adds.

Bid Chicago/NYC. I missed Perkins at 11, Katten at 14, Shearman at 17, and Jones Day (Chicago) at 20. I didn't get anything past 25.

Re: UChicago OCI 2012
Hopefully this advice isn't too late, but I'll try anyway. You have a huge list, but seems to generally comport with where you're at in the class outside of the obvious reaches already mentioned. One thing to keep in mind is that a few of your firms like V&E New York only take 6-10 people per summer, and my impression is that they are more fit conscious than most. Have also heard that about WSGR NY. Make sure you bid on a fair number that have larger summer classes and aren't known for having a specific culture.Emma. wrote:It'd be helpful to know how many interview slots each office has. Also, if you are anonymous, may as well tell us your actual GPA. Bidding is weird, and it shouldn't necessarily be in order of preference. You are just trying to maximize your screening interviews. Do you have any sense of how many people in your class are bidding SoCal?Anonymous User wrote:I am completely lost with OCI. If you have any tips on my bidlist, I would appreciate it. Ties to socal, only bidding socal/ny to minimize the number of markets (or should i be bidding chicago as well?).

As for NY v. Chi, it'll probably be easier to land NYC.. But if you'd prefer Chi over NY then I'd either pick up Chicago in addition, or drop NY altogether. Don't potentially lock yourself into NY if you don't want to live there.
Without knowing numbers of slots, your list looks OK. I suspect that Susman and Irell might be wasted bids, and people who know more about NYC might be able to suggest other firms to drop. You will generally get interviews with all your top three bids and 7-8 of your top 10, so fill those with firms that are not too selective & have good sized classes.
EDIT: Never mind, your bidding process is over.

3L, so haven't looked at the list. Is the V20 NYC firm that has confirmed stealth layoffs (made known here and elsewhere) doing OCI?

For future students:
Bid Chi and NYC.
Most of my bids were within 1-21. Worth noting is that:
Didn't get Weil at 14 nor Winston at 12.
I did get Barrack Ferrazano at 33. (surprised this happened)

Got most of a secondary market, but missed out on some NY firms I really wanted: DPW, Cleary, Weil.
How easy is it to get interviews through open sign ups? Should I be hustling at hospitality suites?

Two things:Anonymous User wrote:PSA: If the firm information says that a journal is required, and you got a screener with them and you're not on a journal, please GTFO. Some of us want those spots. See, e.g., Weil.
* My sense from last year is that those firms don't actually require a journal. If you had a 180 and didn't do the writing comp, Weil would likely take you in a heartbeat.
* If you're on a journal, you should know that the Maroon Book doesn't use abbreviations. See, for example, Don't Be A Prick on the Internet.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
