Re making partner - it's a fucking crapshoot anywhere. Junior associates shouldn't get too hung-up on planning for partnership, since any number of factors beyond your control could ruin your plans. Work hard, own your case (even the shitty assignments), pay attention to detail, don't pad your hours, know the firm's social structure and power partners/rising-star senior associates, and you're well on your way at just about any firm.
