Whitty had to fill out an application but I never had to. I think it's pretty standard to assume that students will be able to cover rent (student loans and all).IlliChica wrote:Most of the apartment companies in my undergrad college town didn't do credit checks for students of the university. Hi everyone! I just wanted to say I'll see you all in August! Went to Iowa City not too long ago and checked out the apartments still available. Landed one pretty close to campus and the landlord seemed nice....and Chica I did have to fill out an application but it was really low key and informal (it was approved before they did the credit check because I had to rush out to catch a plane.).

I had to put $20 down with my app. for a credit check. This was at the Old Gold complex through Heritage Property.IlliChica wrote:Most of the apartment companies in my undergrad college town didn't do credit checks for students of the university. Hi all! I'll be seeing you guys in August and I'm crazy excited. I'll be visiting IC this Sunday and Monday (May 18 and 19) and I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not the Law Building/ Library will be open on Sunday. I really want to stop in and check it out. Thanks!

So, I talked with some 1Ls this past week and asked them how finals were for them. Turns out they were really tough. Who woulda thunk?!

Dude, don't do that. I'm still in the "yay I got into law school" phase. I don't want to hit the "holy shit law school is kinda hard" phase for awhile.Brick Tamland wrote:So, I talked with some 1Ls this past week and asked them how finals were for them. Thanks, Whitty!
I'm with Norse...I'm still excited about finally making a decision as to where to attend, finding a place, the new adventure, all that good stuff. I don't want to think about the brick wall that is awaiting me in IC.
Question for everyone: Anyone else take time off before law school? I've taken almost four years. Just wondering if I'm going to be the only oldster....

I think many of the posters on here are the "traditional" straight out of undergrad folks except for a few. I do remember a few individuals at Admitted Students Day who were older and said they had children though.
I don't know how you were able to take four years off... I'm afraid if I did that I wouldn't be able to push myself to go back to school. Kudos to you!

A few things sold me:IlliChica wrote:Idk if this q's been asked before, but what did it for you guys... I mean, what SOLD you on Iowa?
- They really emphasized the open door policy with professors and other faculty. I just felt like I would get a lot of attention and help.
- Reputation (Top 25ish law school)
- Atmosphere. Iowa City is a neat place.
- All in all, everyone seemed extremely nice!

Glad to see such an active Iowa 2012 page. At this time last year, there were about four of us on TLS. I just finished my 1L year and although I am not on TLS often, I would be willing to field questions. Enjoy this last summer.

I'll also be an olster. I believe the average age of Iowa 1Ls is 25ish.webster021 wrote: Question for everyone: Anyone else take time off before law school? I've taken almost four years. Just wondering if I'm going to be the only oldster....

Re: Iowa 2012
After the high rankings inside and outside of USNews, the placement in Minneapolis, the size of the library, RA for in-state tuition availability, and talk of faculty greatness, the visit to IC to see how cool it is probably sold me. I also spoke with a 3L at the ASD who answered all 4 bazillion questions I asked with answers that were very promising and encouraging.IlliChica wrote:Idk if this q's been asked before, but what did it for you guys... Oh, and Dean Byrd is cool, too.

Are you saying that once I'm in law school the summer season will no longer exist?? Crap.
Here's a question, on a scale from 1-10, how tough is law school?

Learning of how ridiculously absurd their arguments were made me want to go to Iowa.
The full ride didn't hurt either but I would have gone at sticker.

Re: Iowa 2012
I'd have to agree with a lot of what's been said in terms of why I chose Iowa. The accessibility of faculty stuck out to me as well as did the attitude of the student body. It just seems to me to lack the ultra-competitiveness everyone talks about law school as having. In addition the RA positions (as long as I can land one) made it seem much more affordable in the long run than other schools to which I was accepted (I'm out of state now).
Another question for all of you...anyone going to have a Mac? Or is everyone going PC?

I think it depends on what you're used to. I know they said the school is Mac-friendly. I thought about going with a Macbook but I don't think that 1L is a good time to make the transition. Also, it sounds like the Examsoft only runs in windows so you have to use Bootcamp which turns your Mac into a PC (sorta).webster021 wrote:I'd have to agree with a lot of what's been said in terms of why I chose Iowa. It just seems like too much BS for me.

I am going with a new Macbook. The $1300 one.
It just seems like a good deal for a quality product. I think the unibody aluminum CNC-machined housing sold me.
Frankly, I am dreading the idea of going to Vista. I will avoid it at almost all costs. I have been a PC user all my life but I am putting my foot down with Vista. (XP has been really good to me, though.)
Whatever, I'll deal with the examsoft software somehow.

I'll be going with a Lenovo Thinkpad. Under $900, amazing keyboards (the main thing I'll be using), and just all the basics I'll need. I'm hoping to get a downgraded version with XP. Liek you, mike, I like XP, but my Mom has Vista on her computer and it has some issues. If I can't so that, I've heard that deleting all the add-ons helps a lot, and that newer Vista machines have some of the bugs worked out anyways. We'll see...

I have a Dell inspiron 1525 with Vista and I love it. I've had no problems whatsoever. I think people tend to exaggerate when it comes to problems with Vista. I also think I am going to get one of those mini netbook deals just to type notes in class.

Re: Iowa 2012
I only mentioned how much I hate Vista because my wife has it on her laptop. The only one good thing it has over XP is that it wakes up rather quickly once you prop the lid open. I can't say the same about my XP laptop. Other than that though, I really, really, really hate Vista. I hate how drivers need to be reinstalled now and then (at the most crucial moments, of course), I hate how it doesn't like Firefox, and I espcially dislike it's fake attempt to create a multiple desktop, trying to be like Mac's Leopard OS-X or even the Linux-based Obuntu OS. Basically, there are operating systems that are much more stable and much more user friendly and media friendly than Vista, and as long as I have a choice, I will pick something that is better over something that is worse.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
