Who else is considering on-campus? I'd like Hastings, but I wouldn't be totally averse to Gropius if I could land one of those 18x12 rooms.

Was it stupid of me to apply Loan-only? My parents make 190k+, and they're still claiming me as a dependent (despite not contributing to my education, which is okay by me), so I figured I may as well streamline the process by skipping the grant requests.

I want Gropius.

To add to my last post--did anyone else find it strange that they didn't ask about preference at all in the housing application?

I am in almost the exact same boat and went loan only. We wouldn't have received grant aid.

Er...you submitted the app? It's not up for 0Ls yet. The app currently up is still for returning students.
This web application is the first step in securing on-campus housing in the HLS Residence Halls for the 2009-2010 academic year. At this time, the application is open to ONLY RETURNING STUDENTS. The application will be available for incoming J.D., LL.M., and exchange students later this spring. Please answer all of the questions accurately and submit this application only once. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Douglas Walo, the Housing Administrator, in the Dean of Students Office at housing @ law or at 617.496.6054.

Oh, btw, did anyone else laugh when the Dean said "Our endowment is very large" (or something along those lines). I guess I'm still a little immature.

Lol, I'm glad it wasn't just me. ;)

I'm really torn between off-campus and Gropius (I have horrible luck w/ housing lotteries and I'm guessing I won't be able to get an on-campus apartment) but currently leaning a bit to Gropius (assuming, of course, Harvard is the choice). I will hate living in a dorm again but it does seem like a good way to meet people and I don't think I'll be able to afford my own apartment 1L year. Once I know people (so, 2L year and beyond) I'll probably move off campus and into a place where I can, you know, cook a meal for myself without having to potentially lug pots, pans, and spices up a flight of stairs.

This is pretty much my feeling. I think I'm leaning towards Gropius. I went on the housing tour, and while that scared me a little, I think the dorms might be the best option for me next year. Some of Harvard's housing doesn't seem that inexpensive relative to apartments, but Gropius appears to be a pretty cheap option. I figure I can probably deal with 9 months in a dorm, as long as I can wake up a few minutes before class, meet a lot of people, and find potential roommates for my 2L and 3L years.

Haha, I did, as did a couple of people next to me. Sometimes, maturity is overrated

Maybe. For instance, in NY, May would never work. I had originally thought we'd be headed to Ann Arbor, which absolutely requires this much lead time. My Mom wants to come apartment hunting with me (my wife thought she had to work), and she already has a ticket, so we'll see what we can find. I've seen a couple of August/September openings already on CL.

I need to renew my cell phone contract and was wondering if anyone knew which carrier has the best service in Boston. I remember that when my sister went to school there some carriers had spotty service. (although this was many years ago so things must have changed since then)

Yeah, I submitted the app today. Today was the first day it was available for 0Ls.

So question: HLS does have a bit of an advantage for anyone interested in running for political office one day right?
I'd say absolutely. I think the HLS degree is the closest thing out there to a golden ticket for politics.
Hmmm...I think I'll do a little more research but this is definitely making me feel like 90% Harvard right now.

I understand that the application was supposed to be available today, but the instructions still say the application is for returning students only and there are no other alternative applications posted for 0Ls.

Until that changes or until we receive confirmation from HLS that we should begin submitting applications, I'd hold off.

Ah, sucks for me I suppose....I submitted it this afternoon (I didn't/don't know how much the system might favor those who get their housing requests in early). I don't think they can necessarily fault me for it though--the deadline came, and I filled it out :P. I guess if/when they send me an email about it, I'll just handle it that way--shouldn't be too big a deal, I would think.

I should add though that they did give me the option to fill in "Year as of 2009-2010" as 1L, which made me think that they were allowing incoming 1Ls to fill out the form.

eu- i spoke with a reak estate person in boston and they said it was a 60 day notification period for apartments and to start looking middle/end of mayish for an august move in.

that being said Im going the dorm route.

I also signed up for the lottery today. I was able to pick 2009-2010 incoming and on the page with the application it said it would be available for incoming students today HOWEVER on the page where it confirmed my app was submitted it said only for returning students. So I sent them an email. Im not too concerned.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
