There's a separate law one? Sorry, what does the CL stand for?jmat wrote:Yeah, you're definitely going to be on the hook for the rent. If you want a cheaper place I would suggest just looking at CL NYC. There are plenty of good valued apartments in that area, especially in this economy, I am not ever planning on leaving mine, despite the fact that it's not terribly convenient to Columbia (moving is a big pain in the ass). Either way, I'd be very surprised if they let you out of your lease to get another apartment as it's even less likely they can fill an apartment once you leave.SleekFire wrote:sbalive wrote:That was a good question - I was curious myself, so I just looked it up:
But, in thinking about it - the hassle of moving after a month seems like it'll be way more horrid than any savings, even if the penalties aren't so bad.Will I lose my deposit if I break my lease or contract?
Leases and contracts may be broken without penalty for the following reasons:
* You are graduating
* Your affiliation is expiring
* You will be taking an approved leave of absence
* You will be transferring to another UAH accommodation
* Your lease or contract is expiring
If you are vacating for any other reason, contact the UAH office to determine if any charges/penalties apply.
Thats just your deposit (i think) but you wouldnt owe the months of rent??
I guess I will call tomorrow...

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
I seem to remember hearing that we do get one (I don't think you can get it though until you do the law school computer training thing, which isn't available until this summer). I believe, however, that it might only be a forwarding address - it just dumps any mail sent to it into your @columbia.edu address.huckabees wrote:Really?mp2012 wrote:My friend (a 1L) has a Columbia Law email: Firstname.Lastname@law.columbia.edu.

How's the email work? Did Columbia send you info about your Columbia email after you submitted your deposit, or did you have to visit a website to set your email up yourself?mp2012 wrote:For people who have already accepted, do you have your Columbia law email yet? What are your goals / thoughts about what you want to do during law school?SleekFire wrote:sbalive wrote:So, are you leaning towards CLS now? I feel like I've seen you all over the various T6 threadsSleekFire wrote:This thread needs to be reincarnated!
Well counting my admission offers right now:
I am split dead down the middle with CLS only giving me $30,000 and NU giving me $135,000.
Opinions?

Haha...
In favor of NU, lower COL. Also in favor of NU, more career choices in the sense that you don't have to worry about debt.
In favor of CLS, probably better non-law options (if you aren't dead set on being a lawyer and want to go into business, for instance). Also, in favor of CLS, NU is requesting that you defer a year. Unless you can make close to a Biglaw salary that year (and assuming you'd go into Biglaw after graduation), those "lost" earnings for your deferral year might also be a consideration.

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
Well, at CLS you'll have more options & opportunities, and there's more upside in the future. You're young (or you wouldn't have gotten the deferral scholarship)... if you're not weighed down with debt go with the higher risk/investment - higher reward. Plus, New York has the potential to be a fun place over the next few years - it had gotten way too expensive & stifling during the bubble, even if it was more lucrative for lawyers.SleekFire wrote:sbalive wrote:

No Idea..... thats part of the problem!
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
