Thanks! Where are you leaning right now? Do you think your phone call had anything to do with the quick turnaround from IU-B?udlordly wrote:i applied 3/12 and heard via mail last friday

I definitely am. I try to read all of his columns, but I have fallen behind since Spring Break. I also have copies of his The Quest for Cosmic Justice and Applied Economics .thisbigolclub wrote:Sapereaude, your avatar is great. Thomas Sowell is amazing. So...we're a top 25 school now. That's a pretty cool and unexpected piece of news.

Holy crap! ND and IU are tied for 23rd!!! This is awesome . . . except I'm not applying for 2 years . . . do you think this will now mean IU will be even harder to get into?coolkatz321 wrote:

Not quite sure. I held off putting my apps in late this year. (I'm retaking in June and applying early next cycle). But, IU was definitely a school I was looking seriously at, and I considered myself having very high chances of getting in. So, we'll see what happens. Although, I think its worth noting that schools that are ranked a bit lower but it more prominent locations (like GW or Fordham) are still going to be harder to get into than the Midwest state schools above them. Thats just the way it is. So, I wouldn't put too much concern into it, but it might be slightly tougher to get into next cycle.angiej wrote:Holy crap! ND and IU are tied for 23rd!!! This may offer some indication for the level of competition in future cycles (cut and paste from my acceptance email)
"I am pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to the Class of 2012 of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law — Bloomington. You should be very proud of your selection in this, the most competitive admissions year in the School’s history."

Ah, so its like a landmark cycle. But, they could keep saying that every year if it keeps getting more competitive.bizjunkie4 wrote:"You should be very proud of your selection in this, the most competitive admissions year in the School’s history."

Re: Maurer School of Law-Indiana University Bloomington 2012
I spoke with a current student at an ASD a while back. She said that the Dean was giving a speech about the the large donations they have recently received and something to the effect of, "now we'll finally be able to recruit the type of students we've always wanted." I took that to mean admissions will become more competitive as they're more able to "buy" their classes. So, unfortunately I could see it being harder in 2 years.

That's a great thing to tell your current students..."we didn't really want you, but now that we have money, we can get people better than you."canadaar wrote: "now we'll finally be able to recruit the type of students we've always wanted." .

I don't think that is what he meant. A school like IU gets better by being able to throw big money at those in state or mid west kids who applied just as a saftey. That kid with the 170 might be willing to take a full scholarship and some familiarity over pennies at G-tow, duke, nd, etc...The more of those small battles they can win the better the overall quality of their classes. I don't think wanting to improve overall quality is the same as discounting the ability of current and former students.

Re: Maurer School of Law-Indiana University Bloomington 2012
I'm a currently 3L at IU, and the calibre of student has increased every year I've attended here. I have my qualms with the current administration, but I took no offense to that statement. I know some who did, but honestly - we know the score when it comes to law schools: numbers are everything. Increasing the perceivable quality of the student body increases the value of my degree by increasing the school's reputation. This in turn has the residual benefit of attracting better professors who want a strong reputation and student body. This again increases our reputation. Its a massive positive feedback loop. Do rankings matter in and of themselves? No. But the positive feedback they instigate does.
I know most of my criticisms were silenced once I knew I'd be graduating from a top 25 law school. There are many in my class with a similar opinion.
So no, I don't think it'd be far of us to take offense to it. Particularly since many of us would have taken #23 over #36 when we initially were choosing law schools.
And to get back to your question about it becoming increasingly difficult to get into IU... I'd say yes. I know I'd probably be a borderline candidate now (163/3.0) and I received a scholarship way back in 2006.
