I did well in Buss's Civ Pro class. If anybody wants an outline, my exam, or general advice, I would be happy to help.

I also got my worst 1L grade in Strauss's Elements, so maybe I can tell you what not to do in that class.

Two questions:

1. When do we find out our schedules? This whole 8:30 AM 3 times per week thing does not seem very appealing!

2. Is anyone else living in Regents surprised by all of the assorted fees? This communal energy monthly fee and 350 dollar move-in fee both caught me off guard.

Also, it looks like the minimum lease is twelve months. For those with experience, how difficult is subletting over the summer until September?

1. Last year, the schedules came out in mid-September, as I recall. Maybe 2 1/2 or 3 weeks before classes started...

2. Maybe next year instead of posting a general warning to avoid Regents at all costs, I'll make a list of all the specific reasons you shouldn't live there.

I really can't do Fridays at 8:30. Now I'm super-anxious about finding out the schedules at orientation. It looks like 8:30 classes are less common in the tentative schedules for other quarters.

Highlights from Winter and Spring:
-The two professors for Torts in the Spring are Levmore and Epstein meaning I'll have at least one of the two biggest personalities I remember from ASW (Levmore is a Friday 8:30 though)
-I may be wrong on this, but I thought last year there were only three electives. It looks like we'll have five 1L electives:

Comparative Legal Institutions -- T. Ginsburg
Emotion, Reason, and Law -- Nussbaum
Jurisprudence I -- Leiter
Legislation -- Huq

Hopefully, you guys will have it better than we do at OCI. But I'm optimistic that either callbacks will come in later than usual, or I'll follow my passion for plaintiff's side work, especially class actions, and reach out in ways that most Chicago grads don't.

Most people either don't have callbacks or don't want to share their success. I have no callbacks, and my grades are fine. I'm also a decent interviewer.

Autoadmit buzzes with bad news. Columbia and Cornell completed their OCIs. At the former, one poster wrote that, "[He's] median at CLS. 25 interviews, 2 callbacks." A CLS friend of mine knows many people without callbacks. It's a sore subject.

The Internet was probably right. The pipeline has its limits. Hundreds of trained associates are unemployed. 2010 took too many places. 2011 is feeling, acutely, the effects of market saturation.

My congentinal optimism stems from one of my favorite proverbs: "one door closes, another opens."

Well, each 1L is assigned to one of six legal writing (LRW) sections, labeled A through F. Each LRW section is assigned to a different Bigelow who will be your LRW instructor for the entire year.

Each class (contracts, civ pro, etc.) is divided into two class sections (the double use of the word "section" is confusing. Hence, my use of "legal writing [LRW] sections" versus "class sections". Three of the six LRW sections are assigned to one class section, and three to the other. So, perhaps LRW sections A, B, and C will have Elements with Strauss and D, E, and F will have it with Dixon. However, the different pairings of LRW sections are intentionally mixed so as to allow you to have class with all the 1L's. Thus, if your Elements schedule was like the one above, your Contracts schedule might be A, C, and E with Ben-Shahar and B, D, and F with Posner.

It's kind of difficult to explain, but hopefully that makes sense. If you have any questions about the above, let me know and I'll try to clarify.

ON THE SUBJECT OF CALLBACKS:

On-campus interviews started on Monday - i.e. three days ago - and there are already people with multiple callbacks. Obviously, I haven't talked to every person in my class about the number of callbacks they've received, but I know of several who, within three days of the start of interviews, have callbacks. Some people already have OFFERS. Long story short, it is much too early to worry about not having offers. 2L's shouldn't panic for another two weeks, at least. There are jobs out there and U of C students are getting them.

Nussbaum is a superstar, I loved Levmore, and Epstein is famous... man, I'm starting to remember why I was so excited about UChicago in the first place

I think I'm gonna go for Jurisprudence with Leiter cause we have similar backgrounds (albeit his is way more extensive... obviously), and I just wanna talk legal philosophy with the guy allllllll day

I finally got my Regents stuff finalized yesterday: the roomie and I are officially moving in the weekend of 11-12-13 in September

Can anyone tell me when we get our loan disbursements, and how we indicate what bank account we want the loans transferred into? Also, I chose the UChicago student health insurance, which presumably starts on Sept. 1st- but when do I pay for it? I want to make sure the coverage actually starts on the 1st, because my NU insurance runs out August 31st.

I had the same questions and called up there a few weeks ago and this is what they told me. Disbursement dates are provided by the school to the lender. In the past the checks for remaining balances after tuition were the student's responsibility to pick up from the Bursar's office. This semester they started doing direct deposit. You can enroll in it through the cMore area on the website.

I'm not sure about health insurance since I'm staying on my parents'.

Okay I know I am extremely late to the game here, but I am going to Chicago this week to look around and secure housing. I am not dead set against Regents. Grad housing would be great if there is still anything available there. Has anyone had luck with other avenues such as craigslist?

Also feel free to PM me if you are in a similar situation or are considering a roommate.

A question to the rising 2Ls (and 3Ls if there are any): How is the area around 61st and Ellis? I remember hearing that a grad student was killed around there a few years ago, but has the area improved? Would the area be a worthwhile (and safe) alternative to Regents?

It was in 2008 and it was a very unfortunate circumstance. Since then, the University has opened a new dorm down there for undergrads (it's first year open is actually this fall) and also moved the HQ of the UCPD to Ellis Ave. between 60th and 61st streets. The overall area hasn't changed that much - it's still developing and there are still some parts, south of maybe 63rd street or so and west of Cottage Grove that you most certainly do not want to be, but I'm guessing that the presence of a few hundred undergrads and the UCPD HQ will make the area much safer than it has been in the past. Hopefully all that, combined with the new construction projects down south of the Midway, will have a transformational effect on the entire area. It doesn't matter that much to me since I no longer work there, but it'd be nice to see all the same...

What's everyone doing until school starts? All my friends have started already and I'm stuck here waiting for another month, so I'm looking for things to entertain me...

I'm thinking I'll work on increasing my typing speed and read Getting to Maybe.... thrilling!

Also, anyone else living in grad housing at 6022 Drexel? I'm excited to be living so close to the law school, especially for when I have to walk in the freezing cold!
