Sent my final decision last night and am rockin my Boalt Tshirt for the first time (didn't want to jinx my SLS pkg no matter how slight the odds had been).

For those who are decided, but holding off sending the final decision pending funding, there is no need. At the FinAid breakout at ASD, the rep was asked directly and he said prior administrations wouldn't give $ to firm attendees, but now (under Dean Edley I think he said) they are not allowed to consider that status in determining awards. Your choice whether you trust his word...

Haha... I was the one who asked that question!

I can't believe they still haven't come out with matching for everyone that is getting it. Is it actually a good thing to have not heard yet?

I just heard about my matching scholarship...don't want to whine but it's not that great, definitely doesn't 'eliminate cost' as a factor when deciding between the two schools.

Yay future Boalties! I will see you all in the fall!
I get back to the USA a couple of days before orientation, so I'll be the extremely jet-lagged one. 8)

You know, now that I think about it, I remember that I missed ordering my crepe because I was in a deep discussion with your wife about what it's like to be an army wife. She's doing a pretty good job at selling me on Berkeley/military men...one of the two should hire her for recruitment.

There's another crepe place about 3 blocks from where I live. It makes for a very dangerous walk home from class...

Does anyone know what we're supposed to do about GradPlus? I was told by admissions to let them know if I want those loans, and then they would add them to my package. Does this mean that Berkeley will be doing the paperwork for me? I'm so confused, because someone on another thread applied for GradPlus himself. Maybe it's because his school did it differently?

I have already signed my promissory note and done the entrance counseling, but I don't know what to do from here...and Finaid hasn't been responsive because of the office move.

Anyone know?

I'm about 90% sure we apply for gradplus ourselves and pick a lender. How this process exactly works, I do not know.

I was proud of myself just for getting my e-mail ID set up. Baby steps...

LOL....I hear you on that one. It's definitely confusing to learn to navigate all of this stuff. :D

I'd go ahead and request your gradplus now if you don't think you're getting any more aid (matching scholly, etc.).

Just send an email to financial aid requesting the amount you want to borrow (up to COA). Here's what the website says (http://students.berkeley.edu/finaid/gra ... adplus.htm):

Send your requested loan amount to fao_grad@berkeley.edu. Be sure to include your full name, Student ID# and the amount of Grad Plus that you want.

You may cut and paste this format:

I,
_______________________________
Name

__________________________________
Student ID#
wish to accept $_________________ Grad plus loan for the 2008-2009 academic year.

First attempt in bold...

I'm going to have (hopefully) some downward adjustments to my costs, but have to get confirmation before knowing how much I care to take. Do you know if we can modify later (or take additional loans mid-semester) if we find we need more than anticipated to cover living expenses etc.?

Thanks for the awesome info. JL would be proud. :)

You can only get certified for the total cost that Berkeley says we will need (tutition plus living and all that...I think it's around 70k? I don't remember off hand). Someone in another thread mentioned that Wells Fargo will give out education loans that don't require school certification...so you can take out extra $$$ if you find yourself stuck.

Is that irrespective of the EFC? Or do they say 70K-EFC=Max loans we'll loan directly?

I honesty have no idea how the EFC factors into any of this.....have you emailed the Finaid office? They are VERY helpful.

Now I'm really curious....is the EFC covered by loans, or do we need to figure out another way to get it? I'm going to ask this in the Berkeley 1Ls thread.
