hahaha. I thought the same thing, but my friend BARELY filled in the answers, and she got an e-mail the next day saying that she was chosen. I doubt they even read them.dem wrote:I wanted to be an orientation leader.
I began to fill out the application. It was asking easy and semi-difficult questions like name, age, gender, address, etc. Then they had these paragraph prompts. Fuck that!

I'm mostly wondering about the federal loans and whether or not they will max out at $20,500 for all three semesters. I was hoping that it would count separately because I don't want to take out Gradplus loans.
What they said at the financial aid meeting was that the $20,500 is broken up over the first three semesters for summer starters, but you make up the difference at the other end, because you can use the entire $20,500 disbursement for 2012 towards your final fall semester (you don't attend spring 2012, so you don't have to split it up at that end.)
My thoughts: Doesn't account for the additional interest accrued over three years on heavy loans taken out in the beginning, especially given the disproportionate amount of private or gradplus loans to compensate for the lighter Stafford contributions. On the other hand, you get to sneak in an extra semester before the inevitable yearly tuition increase. Not sure how that balances out in the end, would love to hear if any of you have figured that out.

Re: Michigan 2012
It seems like in the past a lot of summer starters have been able to start work early, after taking the February bar... and that benefits them for a long time because of being considered part of the earlier class for lockstep raises and stuff. That definitely isn't the case anymore, with firms pushing back start dates for everybody, and who knows if/when will be again. Instead, you have people who graduated in December who will go almost a full year before being able to start their firm jobs.

I am debating bringing my girlfriend with me... if I choose Michigan she will be moving to AA, so it would be nice to have her there, but I also don't want to just leave her in a hotel room all day if there aren't any events for her to go to. Any input?

SOs can go to anything they want, as far as I know. It's just been the experience of some of us that our SOs get bored relatively early on in the ASW and find their own thing to do in Ann Arbor instead.

That's probably preferable anyway. SOs will be moving to AA, not attending Michigan Law. Taking the opportunity to scout/explore the city seems like a great idea.Alexandria wrote:SOs can go to anything they want, as far as I know. Can anyone forward the summer starter MAP email? I haven't received it and would like to know some details about the program (it will change my plans for moving).

Care to elaborate on why your wife hates it and what all the sneers are about?

It's cold here. Ridiculously cold. We're used to sitting outside on our deck studying and having some cold ones. The 4-5 months of hibernate weather can give you cabin fever.Artvark1 wrote:Care to elaborate on why your wife hates it and what all the sneers are about?
Outside of that, we're a little bit older, so the undergrad scene is barf-tastic. It's not like we're from the most cosmopolitan of places, but at least we had a ton of decent restaurants in Orlando. We went to UF as well, and she's having a really hard time coping with a craptastic football team. I got dirty glares every time Threet or Sheridan threw an incomplete pass. That's a lot of dirty looks, my friend. UF winning the National Championship didn't help much (we both transferred from UF to UM).
Ann Arbor could totally be your thing -- don't let me bias you. It's pretty sleepy, the food is cheap (and sometimes good), the beer is plentiful (and also good), and I really like the people.

That's great. That leaves enough time to hopefully hear back from my other top choice, to visit Ann Arbor (I'm thinking April 10th and 11th; I can't make ASW due to a mean Econ professor who won't let me take an exam early/late. Anyone else visiting then?) and the April 14th reception in NYC.

Sorry guys, it seems unlikely that I will be joining everyone in Ann Arbor in the fall. Michigan turned down my request for merit aid (I used an offer from UVA). Unless something completely wows me at ASW next week, I just don't see it happening.

I know so few 1Ls that whatever you said to out yourself probably didn't mean much to me. I don't mean that in an assholey way... I'm sure you 1Ls are great.
I was very social as a 1L, and I feel like a hermit as a 2L.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
