Mr. T6: With regard to the casebooks (which seem to be ridiculously expensive), is there a recommended utility in buying an older version and just printing off any new cases? Are case books just books of case printouts or are they more?

Depends on the casebook, but always more than just cases. I would advise buying them. If you can get an unmarked used version, more power to you.

Avoid buying new books. Most 2L/3Ls will sell them to you at bargain prices. You can have my Contracts or Crim books for $15 each.

The books feature heavily edited* cases and supplementary material. Usually, the supplementary material is too academic to be useful for the exam, but there are exceptions. It's also helpful for future law professors.

* Most appellate opinions deal with more than three or four issues. Often, a case can have as many as a half dozen holdings. Casebooks edit these opinions in order to isolate a legal issue.

Publishers intentionally rearrange the page numbers, making it much harder to follow the syllabus. Most responsible students will advise against it, but I think you should be fine.

Don't know about New Grad, but AT&T has a tower right near the main quads, so reception has traditionally been good. The rest of Chicago though...

Marketplace is pretty reliable. It's basically a U Chicago only version of Craigslist. Sometimes it can be barren, but right now (and near the end of the academic year) tend to be pretty good times to get deals on it...

So today on the website I noticed there is an RSVP form for a class of 2012 dinner. I haven't received anything about the dinner, and the RSVP form doesn't even list a date or location. Anyone heard about this yet?

@dresden: Assuming you're not getting an ginormous scholarship, you'll need to fill out TWO applications on the lender site: one for the GradPlus and another for the Stafford.

FWIW, I found the SLA financial aid materials (particularly the website) to be horribly confusing. I spent a long time trying to figure everything out and still didn't get it right the first or second time.

In the end, I used the materials sent by another school (thanks Penn!), which included incredibly detailed and helpful instructions as well as spreadsheets with breakdowns of how much to borrow from whom. The SLA site makes you do all the math yourself, which is more than a little daunting for a numerically-challenged person such as myself. The disparity in materials between Chicago and Penn was rather shocking and I hope it doesn't bode poorly w/r/t the rest of the administration ...

I also found the SLA stuff to be pretty sparse and confusing. I don't think it is really reflective of the admin though because every time I called the financial aid people and SLA they were EXTREMELY patient and accommodating. And I called a lot.

I'm surprised they scheduled 1L classes for the 8:30am slot, as they didn't do that last year. Granted, it wasn't uncommon to have makeups scheduled then, but that was it.

As for your "a" and "b" schedules, this is a significant oversimplification of the actual schedule. Each LRW section (a/b/c/d/e/f) has its own unique combination of the two possible professors for each class, yielding six different combinations. If you do the math, there are 16 possible schedules (many of which are ruled out by conflicts), but only 6 are actually used. I didn't see the schedules posted on the website yet, so all I can tell you is that you have a 50% chance of having Samaha's Civ Pro and a 50% chance of having Ben-Shahar's contracts. It is possible that some sections have neither. However, since the schedules conflict, we know that no one has both. The bottom line is that most of you, and possibly all of you, will have 8:30am class three days a week, but not more than that.

Edit: and that class is two hours long too. Sheesh. Posner is fun, but I'd rather have Ben-Shahar I think.
