Eh, all law students get fat and out of shape. It's not that bad.

I don't think that's true. Some New Grad residents, including myself, got into better shape thanks to the personal gym on the 2nd floor.

Ratner is *nice* though. Especially if you like to swim, as it is easily the best pool in the city of Chicago. Even though I'm headed to Northwestern, I'll still be paying for my alumni membership to Ratner so I can continue swimming down there...

Is that piss poor excuse for a "gym" on the ground floor of Regents really all there is??? When I heard how much they charged (and when they said it was world class), I assumed it was world class. NOT A SINGLE ELLIPTICAL!?!? JUST THREE arc trainers, the really awkward cha cha girl track that in no way resembles a normal running stride??? You've got to be fucking kidding me. No pull up machine. No towel service. My main reason for moving here was that there was a good gym in the building. I wish I had saved myself the building's markup and bought myself $6000 worth of decent exercise equipment. I am really really upset.

UofC cards were not available until mid-September last year. They took pictures at Bartlett.

Nope. I picked up mine in the first week of September last year. They were taking photos and handing out cards at the card office in the front of Regenstein. Take a look at this for more information. I didn't see a specific date when the card office opens up again, if it hasn't already done so. The card gets you into Ratner for free, as well as a couple of the Hyde Park bus routes, which is convenient.

Phew. At least it looks like the 172 goes from near Regents, past 55th & Ellis, and on to the law school. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So you can take the 172 from Regents to the gym? Sounds like a plan, I'm definitely not paying $100/month for a crappy gym if there's a somewhat convenient and free option.

unfortunately i can't recommend anyone but i would definitely say stear clear of chicago apartment finders-- i had a bad experience with them. as a last resort, i believe they have an office in hyde park, but i would exhaust all other options first.

Running along the lakefront is pretty easy for those who live in Regents though, right? (At least until the weather gets colder.)

Does U of C have any sort of running club?

I heard over and over that Regents is overpriced, but no one ever told me that the gym sucks. I think as long as the same bus that I have to take to class takes me past Ratner, I'll be fine. I'm motivated enough (hello, wedding dress), and will be guilted a lot every time I have to pass by it.

Nobody told you that the Regents gym sucked because, well, Obama used to work out in the Regents gym last year before he moved to into the White House. The memory of being frisked by the Secret Service still has the power to make the suckers swoon. Personally, I remain shocked that Regents charges for use of the gym on top of the inflated rents.

Anyway, Ratner is nice. But you will need to be extra motivated to walk there in the frigid winter. It's really too short a distance to bother taking the bus.

Re: The Fountainhead. Do you guys really need law school professors to tell you that Ayn Rand is the binky of the narcissistic high school student and should never be named in adult conversation? Cardboard characters; a pathetic tendency to smuggle half-baked [strike]philosophy[/strike] propaganda into fiction, where academic philosophers rarely deign to tread; and the not-unrelated habit of derailing the (sexy, if not particularly engaging) narrative with fifty-page screeds about the moral value of a freaking economic system... OK, that is all I will say about Ayn Rand for the year.

And yes, Regents offers easy access to the lakefront trail for runners & cyclists.

Now, Regents gym... wow. That seriously sucks. I have no idea why, but I actually never checked out the gym during the ASW. I guess I was just mesmerized by the indoor pool and sort of assumed. Although, I do have to say that going with friends to Ratner sounds like fun. But then again maybe I just don't know what Chicago winter is like...

No 1Ls lived there last year. It's okay, but I don't see why anyone would choose it over other University Housing. There are cheaper and nicer options with the same proximity to the LS.

The bookstore recently posted the booklist for fall quarter. This means that I can see which professors are teaching which classes, but not the times for which their classes are scheduled.

it's on the orientation schedule (i think there's a link to that in the july letter) - i'm pretty sure it's on the second day of orientation in the green lounge around 6 (and business attire is "suggested," iirc )

this is a great question - i've been wondering this too - the two books listed for ben-shahar alone are 120-150, even used on amazon
