I am deciding between Michigan ($$) v. Penn ($) v. Columbia, but I have not yet gotten a financial aid determination from Columbia. Are others in the same boat? The deposit deadline is in three weeks, so I hope to hear soon.

wait, nvm... my place is fine. I don't have to put on pants to drink in my own apartment (win).

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
hey so kind of random but to all those who have enrolled and haven't gotten the e-mail about setting up e-mail yet, i realized you can look up your "UNI" by going here http://www.law.columbia.edu/law_school/ ... dent#41285
and clicking on the "look up UNI" when you you're prompted to enter it.
also sadly i'm not in nyc although this TLS meet-up sounds fantastic.

I was just curious (as someone looking at Columbia and NYU). How did you guys feel about the whole "Columbia is more pretentious" aspect as well as the "not in the village" aspect. Coming down to the wire and still a little worried about these things.

Um, yes, we most certainly did.MeTalkPrettyOneDay wrote:Did we just become best friends?HugerThanSoup wrote:Also, Godfather's are great, especially when accompanied by a tightly rolled cigar.
Seriously though, we drank those in the cigar room on the cruise my roommates and I went on. It was amazing, especially when you're already a little tipsy due to the constant rocking of the boat.

I haven't gotten anything regarding FA from Columbia either. I have to make a decision by April 15th, but I didn't notify them about this offer (primarily because it's not from a "comparable" school like Michigan or Penn...). Either case, I'm sure you'll hear from them before your deadline, esp if they know about it.journogirl wrote:I am deciding between Michigan ($$) v. Penn ($) v. IMO, i won't be so worried about columbia being more "pretentious". NYU and CLS pretty much admit the same group of people, i am sure there are up tight people at NYU as well. It is not like you will be friends with all 400 of people in your class. Doesn't matter where you go, you should be able to find a group of people that you like.X58 wrote:I was just curious (as someone looking at Columbia and NYU). Isn't there a little pretentiousness behind the whole "we live in the Village" thing, anyway?X58 wrote:I was just curious (as someone looking at Columbia and NYU). I, for one, would rather live in Morningside Heights (less screaming drunk teenagers and tourists running around at all hours of the night).
I feel like people have a tendency to stereotype Columbia students as uptight and pretentious. However, I can easily disprove this by saying that I am fucking cool as shit, and I will drink with you, regardless of who you are.

Yeah, there are pretentious people at both schools. NYU seemed to be more hipster pretentious "We're so much cooler than all other Law schools and law students" and CLS was more ivy pretentious. Pick your poison.Lem37 wrote:Isn't there a little pretentiousness behind the whole "we live in the Village" thing, anyway?X58 wrote:I was just curious (as someone looking at Columbia and NYU). I didn't really get the Ivy prestigious vibe from CLS - it seems like that's more of an undergrad & other grad program thing, but the fact that Columbia Law is clearly a step below Harvard/Yale was clearly a moderating factor. I actually saw more obvious prestige-hyping at the NYU day.takingmytime wrote:Yeah, there are pretentious people at both schools. I'm not really wowed by going to school in the Village anyway, but I guess some people need the Felicity Porter experience they missed out in undergrad, so that's cool. It seems like more fun to drink in Morningside Heights anyway, and clearly there are at least a few people headed to CLS on this thread who like to drink, and that's all I need.

hah, I'm leaning Columbia in my deliberations and I've got to say I definately have enjoyed the recent turn in the conversation. Nothing like law decision obsession turning to fav drink ratings.

I only drink beer. Am I going to get made fun of for not drinking something more refined?

I don't drink beer at all. Am I going to get made fun of for not drinking what seems to be the staple of student life? : /

There's a fine bar right near Columbia that sells PBRs for 2.50 a bottle. It's totally possible to enjoy a night of NYC drinking and debauchery for less than twenty bucks.

I found everything in the Morningside area to be ridiculously affordable. Weird.jmat wrote:There's a fine bar right near Columbia that sells PBRs for 2.50 a bottle. It's totally possible to enjoy a night of NYC drinking and debauchery for less than twenty bucks.

Re: Columbia Law School 2012!
I will be heading down to CLS this monday for a visit, so I'll try to snag a few photos while I'm down there. Anyone else going to be in the area? Will be there until Wednesday.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
