I'm pretty certain it would be snail mailed. When I spoke to Dean Z, she said that letters containing awards are sent out.
I got an e-mail last week, though I could still be receiving a letter. I only got info about loans.. no scholarship for me :(

Congrats on the dean's scholarship! It seems very well deserved! :) I just wish Dean Z would have shown me some love as well

Thank you =) Yes, I received the scholarship through snail mail but I was wondering about financial aid. I suppose I should wait for the financial aid stuff via e-mail itzjulz?

I'm sorry to hear about that. :( I think scholarships are very numbers based. I was just thinking this morning that retaking the LSAT really was the best decision of my cycle - I might have still gotten in with my first score, but I really don't think that a below median LSAT (my first score was 168) would have netted me a Dean's Scholarship, GPA notwithstanding.

It's pretty amazing what a financial difference a couple of points can make.

I still think you should pick Michigan over Cali schools. Don't forget the savings in terms of COL. L.A. is expensive as hell.

I just checked my admitted students website (the one you check to see if you're in, not the Complete/Decision one) and clicked on Financial Aid Communications. It shows that I'm receiving a Dean's Scholarship for $18,000 now, which is definitely pretty exciting as I was only admitted last week. Was really hoping for a little more (60k would probably hook me in to Michigan over NYU for sure. Dean Z - are you reading this? I love you, please give my mind an excuse to choose Michigan!), so I guess I'll have to see if I get anything from NYU or Northwestern so I can try to negotiate a little more money.

I really hope the letter comes soon to corroborate this as it would definitely seal my decision. The site also indicates I should still submit my need info to be eligible for need-based grants. UCLA recently gave me close to 6k in need, so I wonder if I'd get a comparable amount from Michigan.

Anyhow, this could potentially be a really good deal for me. What with SO relocating with me and all, whatever loans I took out would only be applied towards tuition (he'd take care of COL). So I might be looking at somewhere around 60k in debt (without interest, though) over the span of three years, which seems a bargain for a JD from a top notch law school like Michigan.

This will be pretty great if does end up being the case. :)
You can't get need-based grants with Dean's. They really just want your info for loan purposes.
Really? I assume you got a Dean's Scholarship as well. Do they explicitly let you know this in your award letter?

I'm okay with that, I mean. I expect 6k from UCLA is probably a good proxy for the sort of need grants I'd be looking at, and that sort of money doesn't make too great of a difference for me (though it would be nice, of course).
Okay, I just received the letter in the mail and it answered my question. Dean scholars are indeed ineligible for need grants. Not a big deal, though.

I'm just happy that I have in fact been awarded 22,500k a year. The site shows that amount and I simply assumed it would likely be the yearly, not the overall, amount. 22,500k a year is a lot better than 22,500k overall. Thank you, Michigan.

It's incredible how much 4 questions on a test can influence your whole life, huh? I keep asking myself what would have happened had I decided to retake...

I'm confused now. On your admitted students check, does it say you received 22.5 or 67.5? I'm assuming that my $18k on the website is a total, meaning $6k/year. That's correct, is it not? Now my hopes are all up thinking it could be $18k/year. :|

I think you got 18k per year. Mine says 15k on the admitted student's page, but I'm getting 15k per year as I received 45K Dean's Scholarship.

Oh, definitely. As I have said, I did myself a huge favor by retaking. I only wish I'd done it sooner. I'm now pretty much grateful to UVA for WL-ing me, and in a timely fashion too: it was their WL decision in December that prompted me to sign up for the retake as it made me think (and rightly so) it would portend more WLs in the future.

I landed on hold at NU after signing up for the retake and was briefly WL-ed at Michigan, too, as people well know by now. After the score came out, however, NU admitted me and so did Michigan. Plus, Texas raised its fin aid offer in recognition of the new score and WUSTL gave me a near full ride (which I don't think would've come my way with an LSAT only a point above their median).

Ironically, the original instigator UVA hasn't made a move yet. But that's okay - I really am in an odd way grateful to them for giving me that WL. I likely wouldn't have figured I should retake if they hadn't done that. So, many thanks to UVA as well.

Check out my last few posts. It's definitely a yearly amount. My page showed 22,500k and I just figured it was a yearly rather than overall amount. The letter came in the mailbox a couple of hours later and it turns out I was right.

So it's not quite 60k, but 54k ain't that bad either.

No, no it's definitely not bad. Oh wow. This decision is going to be murder. I'm really thinking it just might be Ann Arbor this year. ASW's are going to be huge - I'm praying I get off the Michigan April WL.

NYU vs. Michigan? Yeah, that's a tough one. I am not yet in a position to choose between the two since NYU is seemingly refusing to put me out of my misery. However, one of the big draws of NYU is the fact that SO could rather easily relocate with me to NYC, whereas transferring to Ann Arbor will be a tougher proposition. Should he end up being able to pull it off, however, it'll likely be Michigan this fall.

I still want to get to have your choice and badly, too, but I dunno if I could justify the debt difference, since I highly doubt NYU will toss money my way should they actually choose to even accept me in the first place.

I would be absolutely amazed if you weren't accepted Dres. They probably are just reviewing you later since the LSAT was added to your file. If anybody is a candidate for money at NYU, you are. Those stats should land you all three of CCN, even with the two scores.

There seems to be a lot of hate for the LC on here, but I'm strongly considering it. Living with a bunch of 1Ls in such a convenient location would be hard to pass up. I'm sure I'll move off campus for 2L, but I think I might regret not living in the LC. Am I the only one on here who actually enjoyed living in a dorm freshman year of college? And it's not like the LC is dry, is it?..

The LC is not dry. I'll echo the other thoughts in this thread -- you might like the LC, but I'd stab my face out if I had to live there. I don't like the finals passive-aggressive thing. It's at every law school -- not just a Michigan thing. Finals are stressful and being that close to law students would drive me batshit.

Dunno, there have been some 170/3.7 rejections that make me apprehensive; still lower than my stats, but not by that much.

Re: living situation - if SO relocates with me (which he likely will, I think, despite current job issues), we'll live off campus. If not, however, I'll probably live in the LC.

Unlike many, I was okay with the dorms. Sharing bathrooms never really bothered me and the social life was pretty great, so I'd probably be fine with law school dorms.

Fair enough, although I feel like studying in the privacy of my room instead of common areas will definitely make it possible to avoid much of the crap that goes on. Besides, at this point I can't really justify in my head not living within the Law Quad for a year while the opportunity is there.

Surprisingly my friends have said it's not that stressful come exam time at the LC. Apparently folks have enough separation from each other and people try to avoid law-school talk at the dining hall especially at exam time.

I agree. Although in talking to admitted students, it seemed that it can be cheaper to not live in the Law Quad. For some people, that would be a legitimate reason. I haven't actually done the number crunching myself, but in my experience, living on campus is often more expensive than off campus living.

Very true, and it frequently is the case. I think for the first year, though, the convenience of having the proximity to campus, food provided (even if it can be repetitive and sometimes mediocre), and other law students around will be worth it for me. Everybody has their own opinions, but if I end up enrolling at Michigan, I'll be living in the LC.

I theoretically agree, but I am many weeks away from making the enrollment decision so I'm not going to figure out housing just yet.

I miss you already Hogwarts....sigh.....

Btw, the main gist of Dean Caminker's cavalcade of criticisms toward the USNWR rankings are that they're not indicative of the quality of the schools. He went to bat for Harvard, saying that it was ridiculous to think that they're only 92% as good as Yale (The "scores" on USNWR are 100 for Yale and 92 for Harvard). He also went to bat for Boalt saying that nothing significant happened to put Boalt down into the low teens and then back up to 6, that they're the same, high-quality school.

He also pointed out that 10% of the USNWR score is dollars spent/student, and not even dollars spent toward improving education for students (the infamous "doilies" remark :))--also not indicative of overall school quality. This explained the small private school bias inherent in the USNWR very effectively. The jab toward NU was well-deserved, saying that dramatically overhauling your school's program to milk the rankings shows that you're either:

1) In desperate need of improvement
or
2) Going way out of your depth, and compromising the quality of your education, to go up a few spots in some magazine's rankings

Basically he, and everyone else during the weekend, was saying that if a school is t10, they're not going to do you wrong, and that you should choose a school based on your own personal fit. During the academia/clerkship panel, the faculty advisor even flat out said go to Harvard or Yale if you want to clerk/go into academia and that's what's most important to you.

Overall, I loved ASW. I think UMich has the perfect combination of not being high enough in the rankings that everyone is in love with themselves and looking to outdo the guy/gal next to them, but high enough where everyone is set--which makes them pretty darn happy.

And to all the April ASWers, go get Rick's-diculous!!!!

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
