Re: Chicago Class of 2012
classes begin on the 29th right? The tentative orientation schedule ends on the 25th. What happens 26-29? I know 26, 27 is weekend... but do we have anything on the 28th?

I love how the day entitled "life of the mind" ends with what appears to be a booze cruise on lake michigan.

Re: Chicago Class of 2012
You are correct about the day ending with a booze cruise. HOWEVER, that booze cruise is also an architectural tour of Chicago. Thus, the booze cruise could be intellectually enriching. In theory.lucydog wrote:I love how the day entitled "life of the mind" ends with what appears to be a booze cruise on lake michigan.

Please. The sole architectural element of that tour was the poor guide drowned out by our drunken ululations.Yointer wrote:You are correct about the day ending with a booze cruise. Re: Chicago Class of 2012
Just got this email:
xxxxxxxx
Summer Graduate Student Social on Bartlett Quad
Thursday July 30th 12 noon - 1 pm*
- Sandwiches and Iced Coffee from Z & H Market Cafe
- Gelato from Istria Cafe
- DJ's spinning records for you to boogie down to!
Come meet graduate students from across the university!
Sponsored by Student Government's Graduate Council
xxxxxxxxxx
Is anyone (Chicago residents or super early arrivals) planning to attend? Free food is nice but the prospect of watching U of C grad students "boogie down" is a little scary.

If anyone is in town and wants to hang out, message me. I'm pretty bored until more 2Ls return in a week or two. I live in 902 N, fyi.

Just to chime in: Z&H and Istria are both awesome. Great sandwiches at Z&H and Istria's gelato is fantastic. So, really, you guys should go eat that stuff since it's free.

Is anyone going to the general grad student orientation on Sept. 22? Trying to decide whether or not I think it would be worth it.

I'm definitely going. I doubt that the info we receive will be useful, but this seems like a good opportunity to meet some of the med and B-school students and find out if there are any hottiesjaen78 wrote:Is anyone going to the general grad student orientation on Sept. 22? In all seriousness though, UChicago is such a strong school in so many fields, that I am very curious to get to know some of the brilliant people in other departments
On an unrelated note, is there somewhere on the UC website where I can find ALL of the 1L schedules(from last year)? Alternatively, could some of the 2Ls-to-be please post their 1L schedules? Just trying to get a feel for how early I will have to get up and what are the chances of not having Friday class. I hope, I hope...

I'll probably go to the grad student orientation too...mostly to meet other people, not to absorb any information.RussianGirl wrote:I'm definitely going. I remember when I was this excited. I went around New Grad introducing myself to everyone.keylimelove wrote:I'll probably go to the grad student orientation too...mostly to meet other people, not to absorb any information.RussianGirl wrote:I'm definitely going. Nope. There's substantial social mixing amongst law students though.keylimelove wrote:Mr. T6 wrote: I remember when I was this excited. I went around New Grad introducing myself to everyone.
That lasted . . . almost a week.So there's not a lot of social mixing between law students and the other grad students?
On the plus side, you'll be so buried in work that you'll hardly notice your isolation.

No. You'll have a class scheduled 3 times a week at each of the four main times: 9:45, 11:00, 1:30, and 2:45. Each class lasts 65 minutes. There is a break of 10 minutes between classes, and a 1 hour 25 minute break for lunch. some days you may have makeup classes scheduled during the lunch hour though. Your legal writing class will be scheduled to meet twice a week at one of the four main times listed above, on a day in which you have no class during that time.RussianGirl wrote:... did anyone have regular classes earlier than 9:45? Re: Chicago Class of 2012
I agree, there's very little socializing between law students and other grad students, but if you want more, you can: 1) Live in grad housing (there were only 2 other law students in my building), 2) go to grad student mixers, 3) hang out at the pub, and 4) run for grad student government. Or get a grad student roommate--but you might drive them crazy with your studying. I think it's pretty lame we're so isolated.seeker63 wrote:Nope. Also, everyone who's bringing a bike to school (and you should): Sign up for the 2009 version of this when it's announced: --LinkRemoved--. Totally interesting, great introduction to the neighborhood, lots of grad students from other departments. They even persuaded the Secret Service to let us get closer than you're normally allowed to get to Obama's house. I'll probably do it again.

Re: Chicago Class of 2012
The first year is like high school. After that, you choose your own classes and show up at your leisure, much like college.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
