It looks like I will be joining everyone for the class of 2012. You can add me to the list at the top of this thread. I also have a quick question. I am kind of new to this whole process of creating a facebook account. Have you found it useful to belong to the cornell facebook groups (both the official and unofficial ones)? Any downsides to these accounts?

I think the Facebook account can really only help you stay connected and "in the know" as far as events and activities are concened. I don't think they would do much harm (barring the obnox applications).

i agree it helps you get to know the people and when there is new information everyone shares it for example the whole housing situation everyone found out to apply online through the online talk, the downside, well you wont notice the downside until you have finals and ur spending more time on facebook than on studying. lol But i bet that wont happen to you.

I just talked to my landlord at Cayuga Place Apartments. They have 1 one bedroom and 1 two bedroom open for lease. The apartments are located in the Commons on Green St., and they are the newest, and probably nicest, apartments in town. Check out the site at http://www.cayugaplaceapartments.com. It's a green building, so you not only are reducing your carbon footprint, but it also means that the electricity bills stay low. The 1 bedroom is a little expensive (I think around 900), but the 2 bedroom is ~ 1500/month (it has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms which is very nice, and floor to ceiling windows that are south and east facing so great for getting the winter sun). I lived here my first year, and loved it, and will be staying for 2 more. Cornell gives you a free bus pass, and the bus stops literally out the front door every 15 minutes in the morning. An urban outfitters will be opening downstairs this summer, and there will also be a coffee stand soon where you can grab a coffee while waiting for the bus (though I usually just run down 3 minutes before it leaves in the morning). Bus ride to campus is about 5 minutes and stops in front of the law school, so you end up being outside less than people who have to walk from collegetown. I highly recommend this apartment, especially if you met someone at ASD you thought was cool and splitting the 2 BR, as I don't think you can find anything better in town.

That's a good question, and the answer is a bit complicated. Generally if you look 2 days or more in advance there are just about no reservations. 1 day in advance and some vehicles are reserved, but most are still available. If you are trying to reserve for the same day, it is generally easy to get the vehicle and time you want if it is Monday through Wednesday, but Thursday-Sunday fill up a bit quicker. In most areas we do have a few vehicles within walking distance of each other though, so if you are making a last minute reservation, it is often still possible but may require picking a slightly later time or another nearby vehicle.

I noticed on the ithacacarshare website that Cornell will only subsidize if you register by June 30th. I'm probably going to jump on this as well.

From reading around (I can't remember where) I got the sense that Cornell may plan to continue the subsidy. If I remember right, this was the first year of the program, so they maybe limited it to a year so they could review it.

Of course, endowment issues may be relevant... ::shrug::

networking is obviously an important part of success in the legal field..

the biggest..turn off, i would say, of Cornell for people is that Ithaca is a) really cold or b) a really small and secluded college town..

does the latter have any bearing on our networking abilities?
i mean.. I am set on Cornell, and super excited..also, it is a great law school, that is undebatable..so we will definitely be exposed to the "right people" ..but then again, the degree of exposure would be significantly less than in a big city..
so I am just curious..how would that whole networking process work in an atmosphere like Ithaca..?

If I understand correctly, there is a pretty steady stream of events/speakers hosted by firms on campus throughout the year. This is additional to the OCI process. I'm sure that if you go to these events you would be able to network as well as anyone in any big city.

Great question. Tons of firms come to Ithaca just to host receptions for 1Ls. There's usually a partner and a couple of associates, and you'll have plenty of time if you want it to talk to them. They're usually at a restaurant or catered at the law school, and in the evening, so you can drop by after finishing you reading for the night, shake a few hands, have a drink, and leave.

Mostly big-law type firms. Linklaters, White & Case, Morrison and Foerster, Paul Weiss--those are the ones I remember by name off the top of my head. Also, receptions are completely separate from OCI, and occur throughout the year. A lot of firms have "home for the holidays" receptions, too, where you can just go and have a drink at the office closest to your hometown over winter break.

this is unrelated but...I just got my financal aid award letter and...nothing! Not one measly grant. Any one know a good source for scholarship info? I imagine they are pretty scarce for law school, but any info will help!
