Re: UVA Class of 2012
I'm curious about crime as well. I've only gotten one police report in my e-mail from UVA, which I've had for a couple months now (whereas, at UW I was getting about 1 a week), so I guess that's a good sign.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
I don't know why they were there when you guys went. I've been there plenty of times and there have never been any metal detectors. I guess they heard out of staters were coming and thought you guys would be packin heat. In general, crime is pretty low in Charlottesville, especially around the UVA area. Obviously if you're wandering around alone between midnight and 6 AM, your chances increase and the rare crime reports typically occur at those times. There have been occasional problems with theft in the parking lot and around school but probably less or at least equal to other schools. Also, some areas are better than others. For example, in all my time at UVA, only recently was the first time I've heard of any crime at all occurring on Arlington Blvd. Certainly relative to other schools I'd say crime is a much smaller concern.showNprove wrote:Metal detectors at the local B-Dubs after 10:00 PM is not a good sign.

So higher crime than the national average.
But is it more violent crime? High rate of auto theft I can handle, but how do the murder/rape/assault numbers stack up to the national average? I'll do some research...

You can always have fun browsing the registered sex offenders. I especially love the euphemisms like "carnal knowledge".showNprove wrote:Simple assault I can handle, but what are the chances that I will be flashed by a creepy old man in a 1980's Buick sedan in Charlottesville? My aunt worked as a school teacher in the rough part of Charlottesville for years before she died of cancer. I used to visit her sometimes in the summer when she'd be running a summer program for local kids from underprivileged backgrounds.
Trust me, there's some bad shit that goes down in some parts of C'ville.

C-ville definitely has it's rougher parts. A lot of the crime and poverty is really swept under the rug, though.CE2JD wrote:My aunt worked as a school teacher in the rough part of Charlottesville for years before she died of cancer. Re: UVA Class of 2012
The city I live in has double the murder rate and triple the property crime of Charlottesville. The difference is crime in a college town is more likely to be centered around the places we'll be frequenting often. I don't exactly live in the greatest neighborhood in PHX but I know where not to go and where something bad is likely to happen.kurama20 wrote:Does every one on TLS live in a gated community or something? You will be hell of safe in Charlottesville.
Anyone know if there are specific areas of Charlottesville to avoid? I didn't see any areas I would consider "ghetto" on my short trip.

The crime in C-ville is very isolated from the schools. Except for rape and bike theft.JSUVA2012 wrote:The city I live in has double the murder rate and triple the property crime of Charlottesville. Basically. 90% of where students are going to be looks like collegiate Disneyland. I did have some classes with a guy who got shot in the stomach while sitting outside of his 14th street rental house, but that and a couple of incidents with the infamous UVA rapist were only real violent crimes that I heard of the whole time I was there.JSUVA2012 wrote: Sounds exactly like my UG college town, then. The Downtown Mall area can be weird at times. Generally you'll never have a reason to go to the bad areas which I think tend to be north of the bars on the Corner.JSUVA2012 wrote:The city I live in has double the murder rate and triple the property crime of Charlottesville. The area behind the train tracks that run parallel to West Main gets dodgy. There's enough activity along West Main that i've always felt safe walking between there and the Main Campus.gladiator wrote:The Downtown Mall area can be weird at times.JSUVA2012 wrote:The city I live in has double the murder rate and triple the property crime of Charlottesville. Re: UVA Class of 2012
I'll weigh in on what I've seen so far, but keep in mind I am from a pretty small county town and went to college at William and Mary, neither of which have much crime at all, so I am probably ultra sensitive.
The only areas that I have felt any kind of concern for my safety were the Downtown Mall and Fashion Square Mall. I have been to the Downtown Mall probably 10 times and I haven't felt really threatened or anything, just got kind of a sketch vibe a few times at night.
Fashion Square Mall seems really shady. I would probably not go there at night by myself. After visiting it a second time I decided not to pursue the jobs I had applied for there because I found out I'd have to be walking through the parking lot by myself late at night. Instead I'm going to try to get a retail gig in Barracks Shopping Center which seems very safe. I don't know what it is about it but I just felt extremely uncomfortable there and it is just a very weird mall.
Kmart at night was a little sketchy too, long story as to why I was there, but I don't anticipate going back.

You're a little sensitive. Fashion Square is just a mall. Like many malls, rich people don't shop there anymore. The downtown mall is practically a yuppie haven. There's a housing project across the railroad tracks down there, but even that area is starting to become pretty gentrified.limegreen wrote:I'll weigh in on what I've seen so far, but keep in mind I am from a pretty small county town and went to college at William and Mary, neither of which have much crime at all, so I am probably ultra sensitive.

Agreed, I am from a small town where most people don't even lock their doors, so it is a change for me.Lizface killah wrote:You're a little sensitive. Fashion Square is just a mall. That being said, my boyfriend who is not as sheltered agreed he wouldn't want me leaving the Fashion Square Mall at night by myself. I didn't ever feel really scared at the Dowtown Mall either, but I think that late at night it would probably freak me out a little bit.
I'm just glad I stayed in Virginia where the 2nd amendment is still alive and well.

To be fair, I'm taller than most men I run into and I think that gives me an inflated sense of security. I've walked alone and slightly tipsy in SE DC at night before and not been particularly phased by it.limegreen wrote: Agreed, I am from a small town where most people don't even lock their doors, so it is a change for me.
