I can't find a plain "University of Virginia" option when selecting graduate loans. I see wierd things like "Richmond Campus" and "Hampton Roads Campus" but no plain old UVA.showNprove wrote:Private for both. Choose "University of Virginia."vanwinkle wrote:Do we have to find a private lender for or Stafford loans, or just the PLUS loans?
Also, for those who applied for Discover, what school did you choose? I don't see anything that remotely looks like "University of Virginia School of Law" in these options.
Last night, at about 8:15, I got a call from an 888 number. I told my buddy, "This better not be Discover calling this late. I heard they really bug people." Sure enough, it was Discover. Worse yet, the guy who answered the phone thought that I called him. He looked at my file, and they needed absolutely nothing from me.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
So I've been in Cville for a few days now and I've been trying out all of the suggestions from everyone here.
Chipotle (x2)- no explanation needed.
Five Guys- delicious.
Christian's- delicious.
Mellow Mushroom- delicious.
Marco and Luca's- amazing.
Also, I now have first hand experience that Comcast does in fact suck.
Anywhere else I should try? We haven't gotten groceries yet, hence all of the eating out.

And I checked directly with the school code, and it only gave me the choice of a private loan, no federal or gradplus. I e-mailed Discover and will let you know what I hear. Does anyone know what the next best option is if for some reason Discover is out?mijahe wrote:vanwinkle wrote:I can't find a plain "University of Virginia" option when selecting graduate loans. panera is also pretty fantastic if you haven't had it before, but it's not that different from any other sandwich shop.limegreen wrote:So I've been in Cville for a few days now and I've been trying out all of the suggestions from everyone here.

that's weird, I used discover as well and there was definitely a plain "Virginia" option. I'm beginning to think I did something wrong, I haven't received any annoying phone calls from these guys...

Christian's Pizza by the slice. Lee's Grill (get the hibachi, that's what the chef/owner is formally trained in).limegreen wrote:So I've been in Cville for a few days now and I've been trying out all of the suggestions from everyone here.

I wouldn't worry. There was a Virginia option when I checked last week. But when I went to actually fill out my application yesterday, it was no longer there.iceberger wrote:

Thanks for the other suggestions, I am hoping to try Bodo's soon. I don't like Panera, we had them at home... too generic for me.

Yes, I definitely saw it earlier, but didn't actually complete the loans at the time. Now it gives you the option for private loans, but not FAFSA or GradPLUS.YCrevolution wrote: They had a generic UVA option when I was filling it out back in April.

Okay this question is just hypothetical that the loan process has got me thinking about, but what happens if you decide not to go? On the school end I assume you lose your deposit, but what happens with the loans? You just cancel them before they start? Or pay them back as soon as you get the money or what? Is there anything punitive? I just want to know all the ramifications because I am clueless about this kind of thing.

I think the answer to most of your questions can be answered by reading the MPN instructions.limegreen wrote:Okay this question is just hypothetical that the loan process has got me thinking about, but what happens if you decide not to go? Okay, thanks, so if I'm understanding correctly, that means someone decides they don't want the money before it is disbursed in August it's just like nothing happened, the loan just "goes away", and then if it's later than that it's a little more involved?YCrevolution wrote:Yep. Essentially, you'll get a pro-rated refund.CE2JD wrote:I think the answer to most of your questions can be answered by reading the MPN instructions.limegreen wrote:Okay this question is just hypothetical that the loan process has got me thinking about, but what happens if you decide not to go? ETA: I'm just asking hypothetically because the weight of the 150k+ in loans is staggering, I just want to make sure I understand all of the ramifications completely.

Re: UVA Class of 2012
If loan rates go down once we've signed on, we won't get the lower rates for what we've already accepted, right? I thought that was the idea of a fixed interest rate. But in this Discover thread we have the following rumor:
Also, are there forms that must be filled out for the subsidized loans from Discover as well or is simply accepting the offer in ISIS enough?
Any thoughts?annapavlova wrote:I also have some news so pay attention here - everyone, you'll probably freak out:
The customer service rep I talked told me that the government will likely be reducing interest rates on federally-sponsored loans come July 1st, fixing that rate for the life of the loan. Now, I'm afraid that this may be too good to be true, but our interest rates could very well drop on loans that we'll be taking out this year.
That being said, a reduction in the fixed rate plus the .25% auto-payment deduction, AND no origination fees on Stafford loans? Pretty freaking sweet.
Also, are there forms that must be filled out for the subsidized loans from Discover as well or is simply accepting the offer in ISIS enough?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
