Haha yea. First thing I thought was wow I'm not even in and there's already homework? But the case sounds pretty interesting.
I liked how he said this is an ungraded assignment. ;)

Not to be a gunner, but it is actually prolly worth reading, get more out of the mock class that way. *shrug*
Haha that was exactly my first thought, too. I couldn't tell if he was joking or if people have actually worried about it being graded. I read that to my coworker and she suggested they include it in our future GPAs :)

don't stress over the case :D the mock class is just for fun, so they won't be cold-calling, pouncing on you, or grilling you just yet. If you don't read it, no one will know--there's always someone who read it, thinks they know something, and will play along with the prof.

Has anyone started to think about housing yet? I see Berkeley has put applications for next year's student apartments up on the website and was wondering when you have to fill those out by. They seem a bit pricey, but I don't know that much about the Berkeley housing market, so perhaps that's a good deal.

Browsing Craigslist, however, it seems like you can get a pretty good deal on housing if you can find a few roommates to share an apartment/house with. Does anyone know what sort of ranges should be thinking about in terms of pricing, and if the University has some sort of mechanism for helping you find a potential roommate?

Unfortunately yes. Then again, so are 99% of Berkeley students. Then again, this just further supports the well-accepted notion that Berkeley students are Stanford rejects.

I am not however a Berkeley Law reject. I really just detest the place.

Best of luck, mallen. btw, didn't you get rejected to Penn?

A little detective work also showed me that you are from Memphis, Arkansas, mallen. Why am i arguing with a guy who has never lived in california and knows nothing about the environment again?
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

I love the detective work, bizzle!! Until now, I thought Memphis was only in Tennessee! Thanks for the geography lesson. I love googling random places I've never heard of. Can I get your contact info, your investigatory skills are on point!? And just b/c you brought it up, I turned down Penn for Berkeley. Oh, and was born in California and lived there (northern and southern) for 7 years.

Sorry guys, I'm done feeding. Just had to respond to that ridiculousness. I promise I'm done now.

HAHAHAHA.... wow...

I've been told they'll start up a email list for the incoming 1L class that has served the purpose of finding roommates. I know that I'm looking for them. I also know it is extremely hard to get anything good for less than $600-$700 a month.

OK, $600 to $700 is not too bad (and I'm not especially picky). The prices for the University-owned student apartments were closer to the $1000-range.

I just can't determine if it's worth the price difference (I think I'd be ok with craiglisting-it for a cheaper place). When I spoke to a 2L, she explained that while Manville was ok, Ida Louis Jackson was right next to the frat houses (which can be extremely loud late at night). She said two of her friends moved in and couldn't wait to move out b/c it was just too loud.

Something to consider...

$600-700 is not realistic unless you're planning to share a room. A cheap 1 bdr in south berkeley (mostly undergrads), is about $1200-1300 plus about $100 or so for parking. In north berkeley, you'd be looking at about $1400 for a decent 1br. For $1800 you can get a new apt with stuff like a dishwasher, 3-prong outlets (you think I'm kidding). If you have roommates you could probably get a 2 bdr starting for $1800ish in s. berkeley. The $1000/mo grad housing is a little smallish, kitchenette, desk, etc. but is about 200 ft from boalt hall.

Right, but did you mean literally 2 beds in a single bedroom? That's what $700/mo buys you. Or did you mean 2 people sharing a 2 bdr? If the former, you likely won't find my LS takers and will be stuck with UGs (probably sophomores).

If you want to live right south of campus, then yeah, I agree that the room sharing is the case. This isn't what I meant, however, and there are definitely houses in Berkeley (usually 3BR or larger) where you can get your own room from $600-$700. They aren't dumps, but they also aren't right next to campus (but definitely within walking/biking distance).

Anyone know what campus parking is like for law students? (I am assuming expensive, but is a pass attainable?)
You can get permits and there's a new garage (underhill) about 2 blocks from the ls.

What you describe here seems very reasonable (and personally I prefer an actual house to an apartment, anyway).

A 3 bdr house for 600-700 x 3 = 1800-2100? I think you're dreaming... check this out: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/apa? ... &bedrooms=

This is an example of an OK house in an OK area: --LinkRemoved-- $2700 for 3 bdrs, this is a several mile walk, and the bike ride would be suicide. Or this: --LinkRemoved-- 1900 for 2 bdrs, again a LONG way to Boalt hall (http://maps.google.com/?q=loc:+1921+Bon ... eley+CA+US).

The price gets really high as get within easy walking distance to the school :( Just a fact of life.

This is typical of a little better walking distance to Boalt: --LinkRemoved-- $3800 for 3bdr, a shorter walk, but still not nothing: http://maps.google.com/?q=loc:+Regent+S ... eley+CA+US

Haha, who wouldn't? :) But think about: why would a house be cheaper in a college town full of willing renters with roommates? They aren't.

If you look in the room/shared something on craigslist, under berkeley, you'll find plenty of rooms for rent in 3bd-4bd places at the rates I've quoted :)

No... they're not that bad. Berkeley hills don't have many houses. Most of Berkeley is a slight incline toward the hills and away from the bay. With some notable exceptions, I've found Berkeley a pretty nice town to walk around in... especially around the campus.

I know prices have probably gone up but it can't be that bad. When I did my last housing search in berkeley (3 years ago) I ended up in a 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment for $1700 and that was a block away from the north side of campus. The stuff I was looking at ran from $1400 (pretty small 1 BR with a living room converted to a BR, also a common option in Berkeley) to $2000. $600 is pretty tight but I'm pretty confident you can find something between $700-$1000 for your own room in an apartment. If I end up coming I will most likely be doing that.

Also, craigslist has a lot more options as it gets closer to the end of the semester so that might explain the dearth of cheap options when you look right now. You aren't on campus right now are you sumdooder?

Looks like finding a decent place within walking/biking distance from the LS and the BART station (my requirements) is going to require at least around a week of on-site exploration. Dang. I just hope they will compensate for all this (extremely high COL) by handing out decent schollies and/or need based aid.

Talking about Finaid, when do we hear from them again? Was it by the first week of April or so if we submitted the forms by March 2nd or something? Sticker right now (including their approximate COL) seems to be over $70K/year for nonresidents. And I think their COL estimate is only for 9 months. It just doesn't add up otherwise. That kinda money scares the hell out of me. Even when there's a Berkeley Law degree at the end of the line.

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Same here!!! I am leaving early on Saturday, to get home quickly to my family. UGH!!!!

Edit: I'm pretty sure they're not too flexible. When I booked my flights, the woman kept asking if I was sure, because any changes would result in fees. But it's worth a try!
She didn't tell me that... this sucks.
I had a similar situation. I was arriving late Thursday night, but when I found out about the diversity dinner, I changed my flight with the agency. They didn't have a problem. But this was 2 weeks ago and I am flying from Ontario, CA which has a lot of flights to Oakland. It may depend on where you are flying from. In any case, I would call them ASAP.

I'm a diversity candidate and didn't receive an invite as well and a rep. from my "group" called me and didn't mention anything. I'm assuming what they are referring to is the admitted student events schedule that Dean Tom sent to us today. There are a lot of diversity dinners/events that seem to be occurring the 2nd-4th and seem to be open to all students of diverse backgrounds. I guess your appearance is your invite/ticket?????

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
