So freaking tired. I hope everyone else who moved into the LC today is relaxing. I'm on the 4th floor and cannot count how many times I walked up and down the stairs today moving in.
Ughhh this fourth floor perch is going to get really old really fast.

Update from my obsessive-compulsive book pricing search: If you (or a friend/family member/neighborly acquaintance) is a Barnes and Noble member, I've found several of my casebooks on their normal website, new, with $30-35 off. But that's only with member pricing. (Though, there is some deal now where textbooks have member pricing for non-members...but of course, several of these law textbooks are apparently too obscure to qualify as textbooks...)

Yeah, first floor is great! Except I can't change without closing the curtains and there seems to be a tour passing by my window every 5 or 6 minutes...

Yeah that's one thing, plus I gotta go upstairs for the bathroom/showers. I can tell that's gonna get kinda old pretty quick. Kinda cold today though.

Anyone know a map of the area that has all like the restaurants and places of interest? All I could find on the website were maps of the university's buildings.

I'm on the first floor (of the D building). Like eticket said, though, it has its downsides. Like being right on the street and thus having to shut the windows whenever I leave so I don't get my laptop ripped off.

But wow, this is pretty sweet for the most part. Though I did see one pretentious/SERIOUSBIZNESS guy standing on the steps of a law review building in a polo, shorts, and sandals, frowning distractedly as he worked the scrollwheel on his Blackberry, for which he did indeed have a plastic holster on his hip. I kind of did a double-take at that. It was like he was playing dress-up, but instead of a princess or a firefighter he was doing a burnt-out attorney from my firm.

As for restaurants and junk, I found that just walking down the South University (away from the central campus, I guess?) led to a bunch of restaurants very quickly. Also a "Campus Corner" place labeled a "party store" but which has a bunch of other things to get you by. There's probably a better grocery/regular shopping option price-wise (I think once we get our cards we can ride a bus that goes there for free?), but it wasn't highway robbery.

About that m-card bus thingy, I'm 90% sure I heard that as well. Should be nice.

Good luck, dood. The way the job market is looking, it's just not worth it to go to law school right now. Even a "top 14". You probably made a really smart decision.

Also a "Campus Corner" place labeled a "party store" but which has a bunch of other things to get you by. The closest grocery store is Krogers which is about a mile south of the LS. It's walkable. When you get your M-Card, you can ride the 6 bus for free. You catch that bus right in front of the Union.

Law students love playing dress up. I'm convinced that at least a quarter of my classmates enrolled solely because they like the idea of wearing suits everyday.

I have some orientation questions: Since the Monday/Tuesday events seem largely the same, are people spreading them out over both days or going to just hit them all one day?

For check-in, when it says 9-10, do we just come at any time between then or we come for the whole hour? I.e., is it an organized presentation or do we just sort of mill around after checking in?

Orientation leaders--will the book buying trip also take us to where we need to go to buy the cheap software?

"Check-in" is just come at anytime. You don't actually stay for the whole hour. You just get your ID and some papers or something like that.

I'm doing the 1st first book buying trip. I think we're supposed to just go to Ulrichs, but I can also take you over to the Union to buy the software. The problem is that you're going to need your ID to purchase stuff from the computer store.

This is true with most grad programs, but considering (1) that law school is so expensive and (2) that the current hiring model causes most law students' fates to be decided one year after school begins, I wouldn't consider LS to be a safe place to keep one's head down until things turn up again. Basically you have to expect that there will be a job available to you in just one year, not three. Unless enrolling allows you to keep current unpayable bills at bay until you graduate, living frugally and taking a TTT job for a while might be the best option.

I'm already almost 25; I'm not going to just kill time. My understanding is that Michigan is a top-notch school, and I figure I'll be able to find something to do to pay the bills. Alea iacta est!

There is one serious issue that I can't so readily find a solution to, though: are you really supposed to pronounce "certiorari" as "sersheeorari?" It's like drunken Latin. I assume that every year, there's a student who pronounces it as classical Latin and gets mocked by the professor. I have no desire to be that student, but on the other hand, man, I'm not sure I can bring myself to say that with a straight face. It's that whole thing about how dialects are all fine but "common errors by speakers of X language trying to learn this one" does not deserve to be promoted to that level. (e.g., I don't talk about "Japanese English" as an established dialect; I talk about "common errors of native speakers of Japanese in learning English".)
